Jacksonville won 13 games last season and the books want you to believe that was the ceiling. The scoreboard says it was closer to the floor. And this is the part that should get your attention before anything else: the same bet is available at two different numbers a full win apart, depending on which app you open.
Key Storylines
- The scoreboard backs the record, which is rare for a 13-win team. Jacksonville scored 474 and allowed 336, a plus-138 point differential worth about 11.8 wins by Pythagorean expectation. They won 13 and played like an 11.8-win team. That is a mild overperformance, not the mirage the market is pricing. Against a line of 9.5 you are getting a team the numbers say is more than two wins better than the number.
- The regression case is real and it comes in two parts. Be honest about this before the Over talk goes any further. Jacksonville forced 31 takeaways, second-most in the NFL, finishing at a plus-13 turnover margin, per FOX Sports. They also went 6-3 in one-score games, per ESPN. Those are two separate pieces of good fortune, and neither repeats reliably. Turnover margin is the most mean-reverting statistic in football. A team that gives back both could lose two wins without playing a snap worse.
- Liam Coen did something nobody had done before. He became the first rookie head coach in NFL history to win 13 or more games with a team that won four or fewer the year before. Now he gets year two, and he kept his staff: offensive coordinator Grant Udinski and defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile both return. Continuity of scheme after a leap is the version of this you want. The Jaguars are not installing anything in September.
- Trevor Lawrence finally played like the first pick. He finished fifth in NFL MVP voting in 2025, the best season of his career, and he did it in year one of Coen’s system. He throws to Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter, plus Jakobi Meyers and Parker Washington. Bhayshul Tuten and Chris Rodriguez Jr. run behind him. That group returns essentially intact. The offense is not the question.
- The defense is the question, and they let pieces walk. Jacksonville finished 8th in points allowed at 19.8 per game, per FOX Sports, which is genuinely good. But several defensive contributors left in free agency and the takeaway rate that made the unit look elite is the thing least likely to repeat. If the defense slips from 8th to average while the turnovers normalize, the 13 wins become 10, and 10 still clears this number.
Win Total Analysis
Start with the shopping, because on this team it is worth more than the analysis. BetMGM hangs Jacksonville at 9.5, with the Over at +120 as of August 3. DraftKings has been reported at 8.5, Over +110. That is a full win of difference on the same team, and it is the single best example on this site of why you check more than one app before you bet.
We are featuring the BetMGM number because we have confirmed it directly and it is current. If you open DraftKings and see 8.5, take that instead without thinking about it. A full extra win of cushion is worth far more than ten cents of price.
Now the case itself. The Pythagorean says 11.8 and the line says 9.5, a gap of more than two wins. Even if you take the full regression argument seriously, and you should, the arithmetic still works. Give back a win for the turnover margin coming down from plus 13. Give back another for the 6-3 close-game record turning into 5-4 or 4-5. That is a ten-win team, and ten wins cashes this ticket.
That is the whole thesis: the Over survives the bear case. You do not need Jacksonville to repeat 13-4. You need them to be worse than last year and still competent, which is the most likely outcome on the board.
The honest counterweight is the calendar. Jacksonville draws a first-place schedule and sits 18th in strength of schedule by Warren Sharp’s projected win totals as of August 2, so the slate is neither a gift nor a punishment. And this franchise has not made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since the run from 1996 through 1999, which is a long time to be bad at following up.
Check DraftKings first. If 8.5 is still there, that is the bet instead and you can size it the same. Add a half play on the playoff ticket at +110 if you want the version that survives a turnover correction. Do not chase the division at +245 with Houston sitting where it is. And if you are shopping in the morning, the number to beat is 8.5, not the price.
Division Odds
Jacksonville is +245 to repeat in the AFC South, which is a fair price rather than a bargain. Houston is the problem: the Texans finished second in the NFL in points allowed and are priced right alongside. We have the Colts at Over 7.5 and the Titans at Over 6.5, so our read on this division is that the bottom two are better than their 2025 records and the top two are genuinely good. That makes the division ticket crowded and the win total the cleaner expression.
Best Futures Bets
- Over 9.5 wins (+120) at BetMGM: The lead play. Plus money on a team whose point differential says 11.8 wins, with enough cushion to absorb two full wins of regression and still cash.
- To make the playoffs (+110) at BetMGM: The softer version of the same opinion, and arguably the better ticket. A ten-win Jaguars team probably makes the field even if it finishes second in the division, and this leg does not care whether the turnovers come back.
Schedule Landmines
- Weeks 1-4, Patriots and @ Broncos: The opener at home against the Browns is the softest date in the quarter, a 5-12 team Jacksonville should beat without debate. A Week 2 trip to Denver is a different story, a road game against a 14-3 team at altitude. New England visits in Week 3, the defending AFC champions. A Week 4 trip to Cincinnati closes the quarter on the road. The Over probably needs 2-2 here, and the two home dates are where those wins come.
- Weeks 5-9, @ Ravens and Eagles: The hardest quarter, and the one where the division gets decided. Philadelphia visits in Week 5 and Houston in Week 6, back-to-back home games against elite opponents before the bye in Week 7. The Colts come in Week 8 on the other side of the bye, a division game Jacksonville won both times last season. The Week 9 trip to Baltimore is the toughest single date on the calendar, against a team we also take the Under on at 11.5. The Over needs 3-1, and the three home games are the path.
- Weeks 10-14, @ Bears and Steelers: The easiest quarter on the schedule and the stretch the Over is designed to cash. Two games against Tennessee, the Week 10 road trip and the Week 12 home rematch, are the ones Jacksonville should take from a 3-14 team. A Week 11 trip to the Giants and a Week 13 trip to Chicago are road games against solid opponents but neither should worry this roster. Pittsburgh visits in Week 14 to close the quarter. The Over needs 3-2 here, and 4-1 is realistic if the Titans games go to form.
- Weeks 15-18, @ Texans and @ Cowboys: The closing stretch puts the division on the line. A Week 15 trip to Houston is the second meeting with the team most likely to take the AFC South, and that game decides whether Jacksonville repeats as champion. The Week 16 trip to Dallas is a road game the Over would like to steal. Washington visits in Week 17, a winnable home date. The finale at Indianapolis in Week 18 is a division road game with seeding likely at stake. If the Over is alive entering December, two wins from these four closes it out.
Bottom Line
Thirteen wins was mostly real, and the market has priced a collapse the scoreboard does not support. Take the Over and shop for the better number. Let the regression argument cost you a win you can afford.
