Jim Harbaugh has now gone 11-6 in both of his seasons in Los Angeles. Both ended in a first-round exit. The market has decided the third one is worth eleven wins again, and the scoreboard underneath those seasons says something quieter.

9.3
What the Chargers' points were actually worth in 2025. They won eleven

Key Storylines

  • They won eleven games on a nine-win scoreboard. Los Angeles scored 368 and allowed 340, a plus-28 differential worth about 9.3 wins. They finished 11-6. That is a 1.7-win overperformance, and the turnover column does not explain it: the margin was only plus two, 11th in the league. What is left is close-game results, which do not carry from one year to the next.
  • The defensive coordinator left to run a franchise. Jesse Minter took the Baltimore head coaching job, and this is the single biggest change on the roster. Minter’s units finished near the top of the league in each of his two seasons here, and a defense that allowed 20.0 points a game was the reason 11-6 happened at all. Los Angeles promoted Chris O’Leary, who began his career as Minter’s graduate assistant at Georgia State in 2014. Continuity of philosophy is a real argument. It is not the same as continuity of the man.
  • And the pass rush got more expensive to keep together. Odafe Oweh signed with Washington on a four-year, $100 million deal, months after Los Angeles traded for him. They did keep Khalil Mack, extending him on March 7 before free agency opened. Retaining a future Hall of Famer is good business. Losing the younger edge rusher you just paid a pick to acquire is the kind of subtraction that shows up in October.
  • The one elite number is the one most likely to fall. The Chargers converted 45.8 percent of third downs, third in the NFL, per FOX Sports. They still finished with a 21.6-point-per-game offense. Being third in football at extending drives and roughly average at scoring is not a stable place to stand, and third-down rate is among the least sticky numbers in the sport.
  • Justin Herbert was good, not transformative. He started all 16 of his appearances and threw for 3,727 yards with 26 touchdowns against 13 interceptions at 66.4 percent, adding a career-best 498 rushing yards. That is a quarterback worth building around. It is not one who drags a nine-win roster to twelve on his own, and the 13 picks are the number to watch.

The Pythagorean expectation is 9.3 against a line of 10.5, a gap of 1.2 wins in our favor. The record was 11-6, so this team beat its own points by nearly two games and the book has priced the record rather than the points.

What makes this cleaner than most overperformance cases is what is missing. There is no big positive turnover margin to point at, because plus two is close to neutral. There is no depressed backward number either, since Herbert played all season. The 9.3 is an honest measurement of a good team that kept winning close games, and close games are where next year’s regression comes from.

Then subtract what actually left. The coordinator who built a top-tier defense is now a head coach in Baltimore. The edge rusher they traded for last year is in Washington. Neither of those is fatal, and together they are worth more than the half win separating 9.3 from a comfortable Under.

The price is the usual complaint. You are laying -145, which needs about 59 percent. We think the honest number clears that, but not by a margin worth doubling.

Harbaugh is the answer, and it is a serious one. He has hit 11-6 twice out of two, with different rosters and different coordinators, which is not the profile of a coach whose teams collapse when a staff member leaves. If O’Leary holds the defense near where Minter left it and Herbert trims the interceptions, this team wins eleven again and the Pythagorean looks like a stat that missed something real about how they play late in games.

The second risk is that we are fading a genuinely good roster on a number that only needs one extra win to beat us. Eleven is not a stretch for this team. It just is not what the points earned.

Taken now rather than after the first month. The reason is O’Leary. If the defense looks like Minter’s through September, this number climbs and the price gets worse. If it slips even slightly, you are holding a position the market has to come to.

The in-season tell is the one-score column. If Los Angeles is 4-2 with four wins by a field goal, the same thing is happening again and the thesis is quietly failing. If those games start splitting evenly, the Under is on schedule.

Division Odds

The AFC West is the reason the ceiling is capped. Denver went 14-3 last season and took the division, and our preview there takes their Over. Kansas City sits at 10.5 as well. Las Vegas is the only soft spot, at 5.5. We have no Chargers position on the division market: getting to eleven wins means splitting or better with a 14-3 Denver team and a Kansas City side the market still respects, across six games that decide this bet.

Best Futures Bets

  • Under 10.5 wins (-145) at BetMGM: The lead play. A 9.3 scoreboard, a coordinator gone and an edge rusher with him. Close-game luck does not repeat.
  • Justin Herbert interception props (when posted): He threw 13 last season behind an offense that leaned on him more as the year went on. If the market prices him off reputation rather than off that number, the Over is the side.

Schedule Landmines

Weeks 1-4@ Bills + @ Seahawks
Weeks 5-9@ Rams + @ Chiefs
Weeks 10-14@ Ravens + Patriots
Weeks 15-1849ers + Chiefs
  • Weeks 1-4, @ Bills and @ Seahawks: The first two weeks at home are the softest on the calendar. Arizona in Week 1 and Las Vegas in Week 2 are both sub-six-win teams, and an eleven-win season counts them as banked. Then the road turns hostile. A Week 3 trip to Buffalo is one of the hardest dates any team draws, and a Week 4 trip to Seattle puts the defending Super Bowl champions next. The Under does not need either road game. It just needs them to cost what they usually cost.
  • Weeks 5-9, @ Rams and @ Chiefs: The hardest quarter on the schedule and the one that defines the division race. Denver visits in Week 5 off a 14-3 season, and the Week 6 trip to Kansas City is the same number at the same stakes. The bye in Week 7 is well-placed but the Week 8 trip to the Rams is the third elite opponent in four weeks. Houston at home in Week 9 closes it, a twelve-win team from a year ago. The Under thrives here because four games against playoff opponents is where overperformance gets corrected.
  • Weeks 10-14, @ Ravens and Patriots: The softer middle of the year, and the stretch the Under needs to go wrong. A Week 10 trip to Baltimore is the toughest date, a team we take Under 11.5 but one that will still be playing for the AFC North in November. The Jets at home in Week 11 and the Patriots in Week 12 are back-to-back home games against rebuilding rosters. A Week 13 trip to Tampa Bay and the Week 14 visit to Las Vegas close the quarter. This is where a nine-win team shows it.
  • Weeks 15-18, 49ers and Chiefs: The schedule closes with the division on the line. San Francisco visits in Week 15 and Kansas City comes in Week 17, two elite opponents at home. The Week 16 trip to Miami is a breather against a rebuilding side. The finale at Denver in Week 18 is the date the Under needs most, a road trip to Mile High against a team that may still be playing for a bye. Los Angeles cannot afford to arrive there needing the result.

Bottom Line

Eleven wins on a 9.3-win scoreboard, with no turnover luck to blame and the coordinator who built the defense now running Baltimore. The Chargers are good. They are priced a win and a half above what they produced. Take the Under.

Two teams that won more than their points earned and one that won fewer. Los Angeles beat its scoreboard by 1.7 games and the Rams rode a plus-ten turnover margin, while Minnesota was minus nine and should climb. Three divisions across two conferences, all priced at BetMGM.
