No team broke more hearts (and more tickets) than the 2025 Colts. A 7-1 start had the Circle City dreaming, and then Indianapolis lost eight of its last nine to finish 8-9 and out of the playoffs, punctuated by Daniel Jones tearing his Achilles in December (on a broken leg too). Now the books want to know which half of that season was real. My read: the ugly half is closer to the truth, and the number still has room to fall.

1-8
Colts record after their 7-1 start in 2025

Key Storylines

  • Daniel Jones rehab is the whole season. A torn right Achilles plus a broken left fibula in December is a brutal double injury for a quarterback whose game leans on mobility and improvisation. He was fully cleared for camp on July 27 with no restrictions, saying he planned to be back in full 11-on-11 work immediately. But “cleared” and “explosive” are different words, and the historical record on Achilles returns is unforgiving: quarterbacks typically start slow, protect the leg, and don’t look like themselves until midseason at the earliest. The Colts entire offensive identity was built around Jones legs extending plays; a diminished Plan A might be worse than a healthy Plan B.
  • The collapse wasn’t a fluke pattern. Losing eight of nine to close a season, including a seven game skid to the finish, is rarely bad luck alone. It’s depth failing, coaching adjustments not landing, and a locker room running on fumes. The 7-1 start was real football played by a healthy roster; the 1-8 finish was what happened when the league adjusted and the margin evaporated. Which version is the true talent level? The betting market spent all offseason migrating toward the ugly answer, dropping the total from 8.5 to 7.5. That migration is real, and it is also the reason there is now plus money available on the other side.
  • The roster retention question. Keeping Jones, receiver Alec Pierce and safety Nick Cross was the offseason’s stated priority, and the market explicitly tied Indy’s odds to pulling it off. That’s a telling framing: when a team’s best-case scenario is “kept its own guys,” the ceiling conversation is already over. This is a roster one injury away from a teardown conversation, and everyone in the building knows which injury.
  • Houston sets the standard, Jacksonville holds the belt. The Texans have won at least 10 games three years running (12 last season) and have made a particular habit of burying Indianapolis in the games that decide Decembers. But it was Jacksonville that actually took the AFC South last year, with Houston going 12-5 and settling for a wild card. So Indy is climbing through a 12-win measuring stick and a defending champion at once, with Tennessee rebuilding behind a rookie contract quarterback. Second is achievable. Second is also worthless.
  • Jonathan Taylor becomes the offense again. The one direction this team can lean while its quarterback’s legs heal is the league’s most proven workhorse. Early season game plans built on Taylor volume, play-action off him, and field position defense are the obvious script, and genuinely the Colts best path to stealing September wins. And his split tells you what actually happened last year: Taylor ran for 1,139 yards at 6.0 a carry through ten games, then 446 at 3.3 after. Put that next to the quarterback timeline. The collapse was not the talent leaving, it was an offense losing the man who kept defenses honest. The talent is still here, and it returns to a lighter box the moment Jones can threaten a defense again. The Over does not need Indy to be great. It needs them to be what they were for ten weeks.

Win Total Analysis

The number has moved. BetMGM now lists 7.5, Over +105 and Under -125, a full game below where this opened, and the move came from one thing: Daniel Jones tore an Achilles. That reaction is the opportunity. I am taking the Over 7.5 at plus money.

Start where this article should have started. Indianapolis scored 466 and allowed 412 last season, a plus-54 point differential worth 9.7 wins by Pythagorean expectation. They finished 8-9. This was not a bad football team that got exposed. It was a roughly ten-win team that lost its quarterback and fell apart in public. The offense scored 27.4 points a game behind a line that allowed just 29 sacks, one of the better protection marks in football. Nothing in that profile reads like a seven-win roster, and seven is all the Over has to beat.

The market moved to 7.5 because of the knee. Which means the knee is priced. You are not being asked to bet that Jones is fine. You are being paid plus money on a team whose scoreboard says nearly ten wins, with somebody else’s injury discount already applied. The calendar helps too: Indianapolis draws the ninth easiest schedule in the league by Warren Sharp’s projected win totals as of July 28.

Now the risks, and they are real. Cleared is not the same word as explosive, and Achilles timelines do not negotiate. Jones may open the season protecting the leg, and this offense was built on him extending plays. One factor that is neither help nor harm: the turnover margin was minus one, 21 takeaways against 22 giveaways, per FOX Sports. Essentially neutral, so there is no luck bonus coming and no luck tax either. The defense finished 21st in points allowed and 21st in yards, so this team has to keep scoring to win games. Every one of those is already in the price. That is what a full game of line movement buys you. When a total drifts that far before a snap, the question is not which side is right, it is whether the move overshot. Against a 9.7 Pythagorean, it did.

Division Odds

Houston is the deserved AFC South favorite off three straight double-digit-win seasons, even though it was Jacksonville that actually won the division last year. The Colts division price only becomes interesting if Jones is visibly right in September. Until then, there are better places for your futures money than betting on the Horseshoe to leapfrog a 12-win Houston team and the defending champions in the same season.

If you insist on an AFC South position, the honest framing is this: Houston is the only team in the division with a settled quarterback situation, and it’s priced accordingly. The Colts number only becomes interesting if Jones is visibly planting and driving in September, a thing you can actually watch for. Betting divisions on medical timelines is how bankrolls die; wait for the eye test, even if it costs you fifty cents of price.

Best Futures Bets

  • Over 7.5 wins (+105) at BetMGM: The lead play. Plus money on a team whose point differential says 9.7 wins, with the injury discount already taken out of the number by everyone else.
  • Jonathan Taylor rushing volume (when posted): The one direction this offense can lean while its quarterback’s legs heal. A conservative early-season game plan means carries.

  • Colts to miss the playoffs: The hedge, and it does not contradict the Over. Eight or nine wins clears 7.5 comfortably and still misses a loaded AFC field. If the knee comes back slowly, this is the leg that pays while the Over sweats.

Weeks 1-4Brutal
Weeks 5-9Moderate

Weeks 15-18Hard
  • Texans, twice: The measuring-stick games, and lately the burying grounds. Houston has won double-digit games three straight years largely by dominating this division, and until the Colts split this series, every optimistic offseason narrative is theory. The away leg is a rehabbing quarterback’s nightmare: a defensive front that hunts stationary targets, in a building where Indy’s recent trips have gone sideways fast.
  • Titans, twice (the old AFC South blood): Tennessee is rebuilding around Cam Ward and a brand-new coaching staff, which makes these must-wins for any Colts season worth having. And must-win games against familiar division rivals are exactly what a team coming off a collapse tends to donate. The Oilers-era hatred still shows up in the tackling. Split this series and the Under is cruising; sweep it and the Over conversation reopens.
  • London in Week 4: Indianapolis plays the Commanders in London in the fourth week, which drops a transatlantic trip and a body-clock reset into the exact stretch where a quarterback still building back from an Achilles repair wants routine above everything. The bye does not arrive until Week 13, so there is no cushion behind it.
  • The September pitch count: If Jones opens the season on a rehab plan (fewer designed runs, quicker throws, more Taylor), the early schedule decides whether Indy is 3-2 or 1-4 when he’s finally full-go. Under bettors are rooting for exactly that slow ramp, which is the honest, uncomfortable truth of this ticket. The flip side: if he looks right in Week 1, get off the Under fast, because the roster around a healthy Jones won seven of its first eight just last year.
  • The December depth problem: Last season’s seven-game skid showed what happens when this roster starts losing guys. And rosters don’t get deeper by re-signing their own free agents. If the Colts are still mathematically alive at Thanksgiving, the schedule’s final stretch against desperate playoff-race opponents is where the 2025 pattern repeats or breaks. History says bench players decide more Decembers than stars do, and Indy’s bench is the thinnest part of the building.

Bottom Line

The market read the 1-8 finish and forgot the plus-54 point differential that came with it. Take the Over 7.5 at plus money and let everyone else keep betting the highlight reel of a collapse.

Why it connects
These sit together more easily than they look. Houston can take this division at eleven wins while Indianapolis finishes 9-8 and misses the playoffs entirely. One ticket says the Texans are the class of the South, the other says the Colts are better than a seven-win team. Both can be true in the same January.
