Pick locks at 10AM ET
The only unbeaten team in the NFC North is getting more than a field goal. Minnesota is 6-0 and has allowed 74 points all season. Detroit can light up a scoreboard, but this is the biggest gap on our Sunday board. Give me the Vikings and the points.
The Matchup
- Minnesota’s defense. The Vikings have allowed 74 points in six games, 12.3 a game. They have 21 sacks and 11 takeaways, and they’re plus 7 in turnovers.
- Minnesota wins close. Four of the six wins came by seven points or fewer: 9-3 at Chicago, 23-16 at Tampa Bay, 15-10 over Miami and 16-10 over Indianapolis last week.
- Kyler Murray runs the offense. He’s started every game since Week 3. He threw for 150 yards and ran for 39 last week.
- Detroit’s offense. The Lions are 4-2, score 30.7 points a game and gain 413 yards a game. Jared Goff threw for 303 yards in last week’s 20-17 win over Green Bay, and Amon-Ra St. Brown had 9 catches for 153.
- Detroit’s injuries. Safety Kerby Joseph (knee) is out. The Lions put guard Ben Bartch, linebacker Devin White and receiver Tom Kennedy on injured reserve Friday, and running back Isiah Pacheco is on injured reserve. Corner Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (ankle) is questionable. For Minnesota, running back Aaron Jones Sr. (knee) is questionable.
- Kickoff. 1:00 PM ET Sunday at Ford Field, on Fox. Indoors, so weather isn’t a factor.
The Number
Minnesota is plus 51 in point differential through six games, 8.5 a game. Detroit is plus 19 through six, 3.2 a game. Give Detroit a point and a half for home field and we still get the Vikings by about four. The line has them getting three and a half. The market makes Detroit about a 62% favorite to win outright.
The honest case against: Detroit’s offense is the best one Minnesota has seen. Goff has thrown for 269 yards or more in five of six games, and the Vikings’ close wins came against offenses that aren’t close to this one. If the Lions score early and make Murray throw 40 times, the points may not be enough. It’s a Game Pick, a lean, and like every pick we post, it lands on the receipts page win or lose.
In-Game Bets
- If Detroit scores on its first two drives. Leave it. The defense is the reason for the bet.
- If Minnesota leads at halftime. Don’t add the Vikings live. Detroit’s offense can erase a lead in one quarter.
- If Aaron Jones is out. That puts more on Murray. Doesn’t change the read, just keep the position where it is.
Bottom Line
Take the Vikings plus three and a half at -118 at BetMGM. Lean. An unbeaten team with the best defense in the division shouldn’t be getting more than a field goal. Skol.
Same-Game Parlay
Two legs, one read. If Minnesota covers, it’s most likely a low-scoring game where Murray doesn’t have to throw much, and that keeps Justin Jefferson’s yardage down. Both legs need the same kind of game, so this is one position, not two bets.
