I’m taking Texas minus seven and a half in Dallas. The numbers make the Longhorns closer to a ten-point favorite, and Oklahoma’s offense hasn’t scored a touchdown against Texas in two years. It’s a light play, because Texas hasn’t been covering numbers like this.
The Matchup
- Texas wins, but it doesn’t win big. The Longhorns are 4-0 and No. 1, allowing 13 points a game. They beat Ohio State 24-23 and won 20-17 at Tennessee, and they’ve covered the spread just once in four games. Arch Manning has 862 passing yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions, and he was sacked six times at Tennessee.
- Oklahoma can’t move the ball. The Sooners are 2-2. They lost 17-10 at Michigan and 41-13 at Georgia, and they beat New Mexico just 14-6. The offense ranks 104th in the country, runs for about 99 yards a game, and has topped 17 points once. John Mateer has six turnovers in his last three games, and Brent Venables considered pulling him at halftime in Athens before confirming him as the starter.
- The Oklahoma defense is real. The current ratings have it sixth in the country, and that’s why this line isn’t bigger. Texas has its own pass rusher to match: Colin Simmons has seven and a half sacks, five and a half of them at Tennessee, a school record.
- This rivalry has been one-sided lately. Texas won 34-3 in 2024 and 23-6 last year, and Oklahoma hasn’t scored a touchdown against the Longhorns since 2023. Both teams had last week off. Kickoff is 3:30 PM ET on ABC at the Cotton Bowl, and the field is neutral.
The Number
The current ratings, updated after Week 5, have Texas almost ten points better than Oklahoma, and in Dallas there’s no home field to add. The board has Texas by seven and a half. That’s two and a half points on the Longhorns, a real disagreement, well under our four-point warning line.
The line has come toward Oklahoma. Texas opened at nine and a half and it’s down to seven and a half, even with about seven in ten spread bets on the Longhorns. When the line falls while the tickets pile up on the favorite, the bigger money is on the underdog. We get a better number than the opener, but the market is leaning the other way.
Why only a light play? Because the line is moving against us, and because Texas keeps winning close. The Longhorns have scored more than 24 only against Texas State and UTSA, and a top-ten defense can keep this inside a touchdown. What I’m counting on is the other side: Oklahoma has to score at least two touchdowns to cover, and it hasn’t done that against a real defense all year. Texas minus seven and a half, light play, confidence two.
In-Game Bets
- If Texas leads by a touchdown at halftime. Hold. Oklahoma has scored 14 points or fewer in each of its last three games, and second-half comebacks need an offense.
- If Oklahoma scores first. Don’t panic. One drive isn’t a trend for this offense, and Texas came back from 21 down against Ohio State.
- If Mateer turns it over twice in the first half. That’s the Georgia game again. Look at Texas on the live spread before the line catches up.
Bottom Line
Take Texas minus seven and a half at -110 at Fanatics. Light play. The numbers make Texas almost a ten-point favorite in Dallas, the board asks seven and a half, and Oklahoma’s offense hasn’t found the end zone against Texas in two years. The line falling from nine and a half and Texas’s habit of winning close are the risks, so it’s a light play at confidence two.
Same-Game Parlay
One read in two legs, both posted at the book on the card. If Texas covers, it’s most likely because Oklahoma can’t score. Texas has gone under the total in its last three games, and Oklahoma has topped 17 points once all season. Both legs need the same afternoon, so this is one position, not two bets. Size it small.
The angleTexas covers with its defense, and Oklahoma’s offense keeps the game under 39.5.
