I’m taking UCLA plus eleven and a half in Eugene. The numbers already make this closer than the board does, and they don’t know that Oregon is probably playing without its starting quarterback. UCLA runs the ball better than anyone in the country, and that’s how an underdog keeps a game inside two scores. Light play.

Points between our number and the board before the Oregon quarterback news

The Matchup

  • UCLA hasn’t been tested, but it hasn’t slipped either. The Bruins are 4-0 and No. 21 in Bob Chesney’s first season, and they’ve covered all four. They lead the country at almost seven yards a carry and run for 281 a game. Wayne Knight has 445 yards and nine touchdowns. Linebacker Sammy Omosigho has forced four fumbles, the most in the country.
  • Oregon’s quarterback is likely out. Dante Moore has been in the concussion protocol since the USC game and is unlikely to play, according to CBS Sports. That puts Dylan Raiola, the former Nebraska starter, in for his first start for the Ducks. Raiola is a real quarterback: he’s 30 of 36 for 413 yards and five touchdowns this year, including 289 yards in relief at USC. But it’s still a downgrade from a starter with nine touchdowns and no interceptions.
  • Oregon’s defense gives up points. Take out the 84-0 win over an FCS team and the Ducks allow 31 a game. They lost 39-31 at Oklahoma State, gave up 27 at home to Boise State, and lost an offensive lineman, Trent Ferguson, for the season at USC. Several receivers are also hurt.
  • History is on Oregon’s side. UCLA has lost five straight to Oregon and eight straight in Eugene, and its last win there was in 2004. Both teams had last week off. Kickoff is 3:30 PM ET on CBS.

The Number

The current ratings, updated after Week 5, have Oregon about seven and a half points better than UCLA on a neutral field. Give Oregon two and a half for playing at home and that’s Oregon by ten. The board has Oregon by eleven and a half. That’s a point and a half on the Bruins before you account for anything else.

Then there’s the quarterback. The ratings are built on games Moore started. When the starter is out, we adjust by hand, and a backup with Raiola’s résumé is worth a couple of points, not seven. That moves our number to about Oregon by eight, three and a half points off the board.

The line agrees with us. It opened at twelve and a half and came down to eleven and a half, and about three quarters of the money is on UCLA. A running team that leads the country in yards per carry, against a defense that gives up 31 a game, can keep this inside two scores. UCLA plus eleven and a half, light play, confidence two.

In-Game Bets

  • If UCLA is within a touchdown at halftime. Hold. The Bruins’ run game shortens the second half, and that protects the points.
  • If Raiola throws two early interceptions. Look at UCLA on the live moneyline. That’s the version of the backup quarterback problem the market hasn’t priced.
  • If Oregon leads by 21 in the third quarter. Leave it. Oregon has blown teams out before, and there’s nothing to chase.

Bottom Line

Take UCLA plus eleven and a half at -110 at Fanatics. Light play. The numbers make Oregon about a ten-point favorite with its starting quarterback, the board asks eleven and a half, and Oregon will probably be playing without him. UCLA leads the country in yards per carry against a defense that gives up 31 a game. UCLA’s history in Eugene is the risk, so it’s a light play at confidence two.

Same-Game Parlay

One read in two legs, both posted at the book on the card. If UCLA covers, it’s most likely in a game both offenses get to play. Oregon’s last three games all went over the total, and UCLA’s offense scores 45 a game. Both legs need the same afternoon, so this is one position, not two bets. Size it small.
