Here’s a sentence that would’ve sounded insane three years ago: the Lions went 9-8, finished last in their division, and the books still hung 10.5 wins on them. That’s how much respect One Pride has earned, and how brutal the NFC North has become. I think the market is one year behind on this one, and there’s plus-money sitting on the other side.

9-8
Detroit's 2025 record. The books hung 10.5 on it anyway

Key Storylines

  • Another new offensive coordinator. Drew Petzing takes over the offense, and the early reviews from Jared Goff on the install have been glowing; the players call it painless. Still, this is Detroit breaking in another new play-caller, and coordinator transitions tend to cost even good teams a game or two in September while everyone else is in mid-season form. Goff has been at his best in systems he’s had time to marinate in; year one of Petzing is the discount version of whatever this offense eventually becomes.
  • Life after Ragnow and Decker. The anchor of the line retired, and then starting left tackle Taylor Decker asked for his release and got it. Detroit’s answer is a new center from Carolina plus a bold move: All-Pro Penei Sewell slides from right tackle to left to fill Decker’s spot. Individually defensible decisions. Collectively, this is a line that lost its center and its starting left tackle in the same offseason and is replacing both at once. Be clear about what this is and is not: it is not a case against Goff, who finished 2025 2nd in the NFL in passing yards with 4,564, 2nd in touchdowns with 34 and 3rd in passer rating at 105.5, per ESPN. He was one of the four best quarterbacks in football last year. The Under is not an argument that the quarterback is bad. It is an argument about everything standing around him.
  • Isiah Pacheco brings the rings. The two-time Super Bowl champ arrives from Kansas City to juice the ground game. That is a win-now veteran move from a front office that knows its window is open and its cap sheet is groaning.
  • The cap bill came due. Detroit paid Goff, Hutchinson, St. Brown and Sewell to hold this core together. That’s the price of a championship window, and it was the right call. But the practical effect is real. The depth that once absorbed injuries has thinned, and one bad month of health at receiver or in the secondary now costs games it didn’t cost in the 12-win years.
  • The NFC North is an arms race. Chicago just won the division at 11-6 with an ascending quarterback. Green Bay’s total sits at 9.5, Minnesota’s at 8.5, meaning the books consider all four teams playoff caliber. Six division games against that field is the hardest intra-division slate in football, and it’s exactly where a 10.5 win total goes to die. Detroit finished fourth in this gauntlet a year ago with largely this same roster.

Win Total Analysis

The number is 10.5, Over -130 / Under +110 at BetMGM. Start with the strongest case against me, because it is a serious one: by Warren Sharp’s projected win totals as of July 28, Detroit draws the easiest schedule in the entire NFL. Not top five. First. Last place bought them that softness, the star core is intact, and this roster won a lot more than nine games as recently as two seasons ago.

I’m taking the Under at +110 anyway, and the numbers get there before the narrative does. Start with the scoreboard. Detroit scored 481 and allowed 413 last season, and that plus-68 differential is worth 10.0 wins by Pythagorean expectation. The line is 10.5. The Under starts with half a game of cushion before anyone argues anything.

Then ask the question the 9-8 record is really posing. Detroit scored 28.3 points a game, which is close to elite, and still finished 9-8. How? The defense allowed 413 points, 24.3 per game, 22nd in the NFL, and ranked 22nd in yards allowed too, per FOX Sports. That is the actual Under thesis, and it has nothing to do with the quarterback: can Detroit keep scoring at a near-elite rate to outrun a bottom-third defense, for a second straight year, with a new coordinator and a rebuilt line?

There is a third weight on the scale. Detroit’s turnover margin was plus four, 19 takeaways against 15 giveaways, per FOX Sports. That is the same shape as Chicago’s plus-22, milder but pointing the same direction: a positive margin on a team we are fading is regression working for us. Each takeaway Detroit does not repeat is worth roughly a third of a win.

If you want the cleanest illustration of the problem, look at Buffalo. The Bills scored exactly 481 points in 2025 too. They allowed 365 and ranked 12th in scoring defense; Detroit allowed 413 and ranked 22nd. Identical offense, 48 more points conceded, and the Pythagorean lands at 10.0 for the Lions against 11.2 for Buffalo. That one difference is why we are on the Under here and the Over there. Detroit is not a worse offensive team than the Bills. It is a worse football team, and the gap is entirely on defense.

Now the counterargument, and it is the best one anybody has. That easiest-in-the-NFL schedule is real and it is not a small edge. An easy slate genuinely raises a floor. What it does not do is drag a 10.0-win roster to 11 while the pocket is under construction, the offensive system changes for the second time in two years, and a plus-four turnover margin comes back toward zero. The Under has to survive the schedule, and I think it does. Getting plus-money for it is the value side.

One more note on the price itself: the Over costs -130 while the Under pays +110, a 40-cent spread that tells you which way the public money leans. Detroit is a beloved public team coming off years of December relevance, and books shade beloved teams totals high because they can. That shading is precisely where the Under value comes from. You’re not betting that the Lions are bad, you’re betting that a 9-8 team was priced like an 11-6 one because the market fell in love a season too late.

Division Odds

The NFC North board at BetMGM: Lions +175, Packers +220, Bears +310, Vikings +525. Detroit sitting atop the odds after finishing fourth tells you the books trust the talent. But this is the deepest division in football, and +175 on the team that just took the basement is thin. If you want NFC North action, there’s more interesting value further down the board than there is at the top of it.

Best Futures Bets

  • Under 10.5 wins (+110) at BetMGM: The full case is above. Plus-money on the side the recent results actually support.
  • Lions to miss the playoffs (+180 at BetMGM): The same opinion, expressed harder. The Under only needs Detroit to win ten games. This needs them to fall out of a seven-team NFC field, which is a bigger ask, and ESPN’s Football Power Index still gives them a 68.4 percent chance of qualifying. Worth the plus money only if you think the turnover regression really bites, and size it under the win total rather than beside it.

  • Amon-Ra St. Brown receptions props: New coordinator, same security blanket. Whatever Petzing changes, Goff-to-St. Brown volume isn’t going anywhere.

One more thing about being on the unpopular side. Unders on teams everyone likes give you an exit the Over doesn’t. If Detroit starts 2-4, your +110 is worth a lot more in the live market than you paid, and there’s nothing wrong with taking the money and walking. If they start 5-1, the Over gets so expensive that you’re capped at a loss you already agreed to. Bets like this are trades. Don’t marry it.

Schedule Landmines

Weeks 1-4Install window
Weeks 5-9Moderate
Weeks 10-14Hard
Weeks 15-18Brutal
  • Bears, twice: The oldest series in the NFC North, and suddenly the marquee matchup in it. Chicago is the defending division champ with a quarterback who fixed his sack problem, and these two games swing the Under/Over math harder than any others on the slate. Detroit’s talent says split or better. Detroit’s 2025 division record says nothing is safe.
  • Thanksgiving at Ford Field, Week 12, against Chicago: Detroit’s holiday tradition, and this year the guest is the team that took the division off them. Our Bears preview backs Chicago to repeat at +330, so we are not treating this as a Detroit win in either direction. They get the Bears again in Week 17 on the road, which means the two most important games on this schedule for an Under both come against the same opponent.
  • Packers and Vikings road trips: Six division games in this gauntlet, and last year Detroit lost enough of them to finish fourth at 9-8. Lambeau in the cold and Minnesota’s dome noise are two of the least friendly road environments in the conference, and both teams are priced as playoff-caliber. The Under ticket’s best friends live in these four games.
  • The September install window: New coordinator, reshuffled line, and a division that punishes slow starts. Detroit’s first month is where Petzing’s system either clicks immediately or costs a game the Over can’t afford to donate. Watch the early red-zone efficiency. That’s where new play-callers show their seams first, and where One Pride’s season math will quietly be decided.

Bottom Line

One Pride’s talent is real. But 10.5 in this division after a 9-8 year is a market still pricing the glory days. Take the Under at plus-money and let Ford Field prove you wrong on Thanksgiving.

Why it connects
One idea across two conferences: the teams the board likes most are priced above what their scoreboards earned. Detroit and Baltimore both need seasons their points do not support, and Chicago at better than 3-to-1 is the live side of a division everyone has already handed to the Lions. Three teams, all at BetMGM, so the slip is placeable as written.
