Everyone remembers the 6-11. Almost nobody looked at how it happened. Kansas City finished 2025 with the sixth-best scoring defense in football and outscored its opponents by 34 points, which is the profile of a nine or ten win team, not a six win one. Then the market hung a 10.5 on them and priced the Over at plus money, because the quarterback tore a knee in December and the whole league decided to file this roster under finished. Take the gift.
Key Storylines
- The best quarterback alive is cleared, and he barely missed last season. Mahomes tore his ACL in Week 15 against the Chargers and was fully cleared for training camp in late July, per NFL.com. Read that timeline again. He played almost the whole year. The 6-11 happened with him on the field, which sounds like an argument against this team until you look at what the defense did around him. Kansas City did trade a 2027 sixth to the Jets for Justin Fields, and that is sensible insurance rather than a confession. Andy Reid has never once needed his quarterback to be perfect in September to win eleven games by January.
- They swapped one star corner for a better one, and paid to do it. Kansas City traded Trent McDuffie to the Rams, then traded UP from ninth to sixth, sending Cleveland picks 74 and 148, to take LSU corner Mansoor Delane. Delane was a unanimous All American who allowed zero touchdowns in coverage with seven pass breakups and two interceptions, per NFL.com. That is not a secondary being stripped for parts. That is a front office spending real capital to keep the league’s sixth-ranked scoring defense intact. Kenneth Walker III arrived on a three-year, $43.05 million deal to carry the ground game, and Travis Kelce came back on a one-year, $12 million deal, per ESPN.
- Rashee Rice is the pivot piece. Cleared for camp after offseason knee surgery and entering the final year of his rookie deal. After Mahomes, he is the most important player on this offense. When Rice has been on the field, this passing game still looks like the dynasty version; his availability problem is that “when.” A full Rice season is the difference between eleven wins and thirteen, and even the interrupted version leaves a top-six defense playing behind Andy Reid.
- The division moved on without them. Denver won 14 games. The Chargers are priced right alongside. Kansas City is still favored at +160 to win the AFC West: the market betting a decade of muscle memory against last year’s standings. Someone is wrong: either the Chiefs’ 6-11 was a one-year injury artifact, or the division’s power structure genuinely flipped and the books are the last to admit it. The four head-to-head games against Denver and LA will answer it directly.
- The record lied and the point differential told the truth. Kansas City scored 362 and allowed 328. A plus-34 differential across seventeen games translates to roughly 9.5 expected wins by Pythagorean expectation, which means this team underperformed its own scoreboard by about three and a half games. Teams that lose that many one-score games do not stay unlucky forever. The 6-11 is the headline; the plus-34 is the evidence, and only one of them is predictive.
Win Total Analysis
The number is 10.5, Over +115 / Under -135 at BetMGM as of August 3. We take the Over 10.5, and it is not close. The bear case, stated fairly: Kansas City won six games and lost its quarterback. The playoff run that lasted nine years died in a division where Denver just went 14-3. All true. What that case leaves out: That six-win team had the sixth-best scoring defense in the NFL at 19.3 points allowed per game, and outscored its opponents by 34 points on the season. Pythagorean expectation puts the underlying performance at about 9.5 wins. The Over does not need a five-game leap. It needs a game and a half of ordinary regression, plus the best quarterback in football being upright.
Name the risks, because they are real and they are exactly what you are being paid for. The offensive line allowed 47 sacks last season, and that protection problem did not fix itself. Mahomes said of the knee that the process is not over and it is something he will probably deal with for the next few years of his career, which is not the language of a man who expects to be vintage in Week 1. Denver won fourteen games and the Chiefs play them twice. Every one of those is priced in already. That is the entire reason a team with a top-six defense and the best quarterback alive is sitting at plus money in August, and it is not going to sit there long. Win the opener against Denver and this number is gone.
Standard play on the Over at +115. Do not wait for camp reports to confirm what the point differential already told you, because the number moves the moment Mahomes takes a live snap in September. If you want the insurance, put a half play on the Mahomes passing yards Under once it posts. Those two win together more often than people think: Reid grinding out eleven wins on Walker carries and a top-six defense is a season where the quarterback throws for less than his career average. One bet is the team, the other is the script. Bet the team first.
Division Odds
Kansas City sits at +160 to win the AFC West, ahead of the Chargers and the 14-3 Broncos. We make the Denver case in the Broncos preview and we stand by it, so we are not doubling back here. The division and the win total are different questions: Kansas City can win eleven games and still finish behind Denver, and that is genuinely the most likely version of this season. Take the total, leave the division alone.
Best Futures Bets
- Over 10.5 wins (+115) at BetMGM: The lead play, and the whole reason we are here. Plus money on a team that had the sixth-best scoring defense in football and a plus-34 point differential. You are being paid to believe a knee that is already cleared.
- Mahomes passing yards Under (when posted): The insurance, not the contradiction. Reid protecting a repaired knee means heavy Walker volume and short throws, which is exactly how this team gets to eleven wins without a 5,000-yard passing season. Books will hang a career-average number anyway. If the knee is worse than camp says, this leg pays while the Over sweats.
Schedule Landmines
- Weeks 1-4, Broncos and Colts: The season starts with the biggest question on the board. Denver comes to Arrowhead in Week 1 on Monday night, and a loss to the 14-win division champion resets every narrative before the market can blink. The Colts visit in Week 2, then it is road games at Miami and Las Vegas in Weeks 3 and 4. The Dolphins at 4.5 and the Raiders at 5.5 are soft enough to recover from a Week 1 loss. A 3-1 start puts the Over on pace. Even 2-2 is fine.
- Weeks 5-9, Chargers and @ Broncos: The bye in Week 5 gives Mahomes an extra week to settle in. Then it gets real. The Chargers visit in Week 6, a divisional test against a roster built to rush four and drop seven. Week 7 at Seattle is a trip to the defending Super Bowl champions. Week 8 at Denver is the second date with a 14-win team, this time at altitude. The Jets at home in Week 9 close it on a soft note. Three of the five games are against playoff-caliber opponents.
- Weeks 10-14, @ Bills and @ Bengals: The calendar turns ugly. A trip to Atlanta in Week 10 and the Cardinals at home in Week 11 are manageable, but then comes the stretch that defines the season: three straight road games. Buffalo in Week 12 went 12-5 last year. The Rams in Week 13 carry an 11.5-win total. Cincinnati in Week 14 went 6-11 but the roster is still loaded with first-round talent. If there is a three-week stretch where the Over lives or dies, this is it.
- Weeks 15-18, 49ers and @ Chargers: The season closes with the toughest quarter on the board. New England visits in Week 15, a team that just went to the Super Bowl. San Francisco comes to Arrowhead in Week 16 with twelve wins and a plus-66 differential from last season. Week 17 at the Chargers is the last division road game and it comes at the worst possible time, with a 10.5-win opponent and nothing to rest for. The Raiders in Week 18 is the soft landing. Going 2-2 here is a win. Anything better is gravy.
Bottom Line
Arrowheadโs still the loudest building in football. A plus-34 team with the best quarterback alive sitting at plus money is the gift of the summer. Take the Over before camp reports move the number.
