Denver and the two and a half, but only as a small lean. Kansas City’s rookie left tackle story is real, and the line has not moved an inch in two months.
The Matchup
- Josh Simmons looks unlikely to play. Kansas City’s left tackle is dealing with a back problem and Andy Reid said there is a good chance he sits. Undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson is the expected replacement, on the blind side, in a division opener. That is a same-week absence to a starter in a game priced inside three points.
- The opponent is the worst possible one for that. Denver led the NFL in sacks last season. A rookie making his first start against that front is the sort of matchup that decides a two and a half point game in the first half rather than the fourth quarter.
- Patrick Mahomes is returning from a torn ACL and did not play in preseason. He is expected to start and the reporting is positive. He is also a quarterback taking live hits for the first time since December, behind protection that is a man short.
- Our card already had this as a pick. We published Denver at twelve and five as our AFC West winner and Kansas City at eleven and six. Hand Arrowhead the two points it is worth and the one win gap cancels it out. Getting two and a half on top is the market paying us to be on the side we already liked.
The Number
Convert the one game gap in Denver’s favour, hand Kansas City the two points its stadium is worth, and this projects as a pick. The board is asking Denver to take two and a half. That is two and a half points of value in a game our numbers make even, and at around even money on the price you are paying almost nothing to hold it.
Then the news. A starter ruled all but out during the week, at the position that matters most to a quarterback’s comfort, replaced by a player who has never started a professional game, in a game priced inside three points. That is exactly the circumstance where our rule lets same-week news move a number.
And the market has not moved at all. We have recorded this game every day since July, and it has sat at Kansas City by two and a half the entire time, with the moneyline flat to within a fraction. The rookie tackle story is public, Andy Reid said it on the record, and the number has not moved an inch. That tells you the market has weighed it and does not rate it the way we might. Add that our season numbers only separate these teams by a single win, which is noise, and both of our checks cut this one. Confidence two, half a unit. The moneyline at around plus one twenty is the same opinion asked as an outright, and it counts once.
In-Game Bets
- If Simmons is active and starts. The one piece of news under this position is gone, and the numbers alone do not carry it. Release both.
- If Denver records two sacks in the first quarter. Hold everything and stop watching. That is the exact mechanism this play is built on and it is arriving on schedule.
- If Kansas City leads by more than ten at the half. Get out of both. A rookie holding up for thirty minutes in that building means the thing we bet on did not happen.
Bottom Line
Take Denver and the two and a half at . A game our card makes a pick, a rookie protecting a quarterback returning from knee surgery, and a number that has not moved in two months. Confidence two, half a unit, tied with Houston for the smallest lean on the card.
