Arizona and the nine and a half. We have them tied for the worst record in the league, but nine and a half is more than that gap is worth.

9.5
Points Arizona is taking, against a projection our published season card puts at about eight

The Matchup

  • This is not a defence of Arizona. We published the Cardinals at four and thirteen, tied for the worst record on our card. We published the Chargers at seven and ten. Los Angeles is the better team and this is only ever an argument about price.
  • Three wins of separation plus a stadium is about eight points. The board is at nine and a half. The extra point and a half is what the market charges for asking anybody to hold a ticket on a four win team, and that charge is real money.
  • Both clubs come in healthy. Neither carried a headline absence through the week, so there is no hidden information propping up the number. What you see is a rating disagreement, not an injury the market found first.
  • September is when the worst teams are most overpriced. Nobody has current tape, so the market leans on last season and on reputation, and no reputation is worse than the league’s bottom rung. By October these numbers get shorter. In Week 1 they do not.

The Number

Convert the three game gap, hand Los Angeles the two points its stadium is worth, and this projects as the Chargers by about eight. The board wants nine and a half. That is a point and a half of value, and it is the same size of edge as Buffalo at Houston in the early window, arriving from the opposite direction.

The uncomfortable part is that taking points with a four and thirteen team means being right about the margin rather than the result. We fully expect Arizona to lose this game. The bet is that they lose it by eight rather than by ten, which is a narrower thing to be right about than picking a winner, and it is the kind of position that looks foolish for three quarters and pays in the fourth.

The line has come our way, and that cuts both ways. We have recorded this game every day since July. It opened at the Chargers by ten and a half and has come down to nine and a half. The market has moved toward Arizona by a full point, which says the read is right, and it has also taken most of the point and a half we started with. Confidence five, half a unit. I am leaving the moneyline alone at around plus four hundred, because a four win team winning outright in September is possible but not at anything like that rate, and taking it would be a different opinion rather than the same one at a longer price.

In-Game Bets

  • If Los Angeles leads by more than fourteen at the half. Get out. Nine and a half needs a competitive second half and a three score deficit says the market rated this correctly.
  • If Arizona is inside a score entering the fourth. Hold and add nothing. The whole thesis is that this stays closer than the number, and it is happening.
  • If the Chargers lead by exactly nine or ten late. Leave it alone. That is the number landing where the market said it would, and there is no hedge at that stage worth the price of buying it.

Bottom Line

Take Arizona and the nine and a half at . The worse team on our card, getting more than the gap is worth, at a number the market has already moved toward. Confidence five, half a unit.
