I am laying the three with Chicago. Four wins of separation on our card, and the line has already moved our way.

4
Wins separating Chicago and Carolina on our published season card, against a board asking for three points

The Matchup

  • Four wins is a wide gap to buy at three points. We published Chicago at eleven and six and Carolina at seven and ten. That is not two teams in the same tier having a close game, that is a playoff side visiting a rebuild.
  • Carolina gets two points for the stadium and needs more than that. Home field is worth about two on our card. Four wins of season-long separation is worth roughly eight before the stadium is handed back. The arithmetic does not reach three from either direction.
  • Neither team carried a headline injury into the week. There is no news here doing quiet work on the number, which means the price is a judgement about quality rather than about availability, and it is a judgement we disagree with.
  • Three is the number to be laying rather than the number to fear. Buying at exactly three is uncomfortable because three is the most common margin in the sport. It is also the cheapest place to be on the correct side of a gap this size, and paying up to three and a half would cost more than the risk is worth.

The Number

Take the published win totals, convert the four game gap and give Carolina the two points its building is worth, and this projects as Chicago by about six. The board is asking for three. That is three points of value on a favourite, and favourites is not where value usually lives in Week 1.

The line has come our way. We have recorded this game every day since July. It opened at Chicago by two and a half and has moved to three, and the moneyline has shifted about four points toward the Bears. The market has reached the same conclusion we did, which supports the read and also means some of the value has already been taken. We are still on the right side. We are no longer early to it.

The risk is the calendar, not the teams. Openers are noisy, and a rebuild playing its first game in front of its own crowd is capable of one competitive afternoon. Our season numbers also tend to overstate the gap between a good team and a poor one, which is why a four win difference does not become anything like eight points in practice. Confidence five, half a unit. I am not adding the moneyline, because minus one sixty asks you to be right about six times in ten and three points of edge on the spread does not carry that far.

In-Game Bets

  • If Carolina leads after the first quarter. Hold and do nothing. A rebuild starting well at home is the expected shape of the risk, not evidence the read is wrong.
  • If Chicago is up by ten or more at the half. Stop watching the spread and add nothing. The projection is playing out and laying a worse number late is paying twice for one opinion.
  • If the game is inside three entering the fourth. Get out. A three point favourite in a one score fourth quarter is a coin flip you have already paid a premium to hold.

Bottom Line

Lay the three with Chicago at . Four wins better on our card, at a number the market has already moved toward. Confidence five, half a unit.
