New Orleans and the seven, as a lean. Our card actually rates the Saints ahead of Detroit, and seven points is a lot to hand the better team.

7
Points New Orleans is taking in a game our published season card makes closer to a pick than a touchdown

The Matchup

  • Our card has this the other way round. We published New Orleans at eight and nine and Detroit at seven and ten. Not by much, and not a claim that the Saints are good, but the better of the two on a full season is the side being given a touchdown.
  • Two of the seven are the stadium. The other five are reputation. Home field is worth about two points. That leaves five points of price attached to a view of these two teams that our previews do not share, and Week 1 is when that kind of premium is at its fattest.
  • Neither club brought a headline absence into the week. No starter news is moving this number in either direction, which means the seven is a statement about quality rather than availability. Quality is the part we have already published a different answer on.
  • Seven is a number worth taking rather than laying. It sits on a touchdown and an extra point, so a converted score with no answer still pays, and every game that stays inside two possessions pays comfortably.

The Number

Take the two published win totals, convert the one game gap in favour of New Orleans, then hand Detroit the two points its building is worth, and this projects as a game inside a field goal. The board is at seven. On the arithmetic that is a disagreement of roughly four points.

What the line has done is the reason this is a lean. We have recorded this game every day since July and it has sat at Detroit by seven the whole time. The moneyline has moved a couple of points toward the Saints and nothing more. Detroit has been the better organisation in recent memory, the market knows it, and a number that has held at seven for two months is a market telling you it has considered our view and does not share it.

Where the risk sits. Both of these are ordinary teams and ordinary teams produce scattered results, so a three score afternoon is well within the range. That is the cost of taking points rather than a promise against it. Confidence four, half a unit on the seven. The moneyline at around plus two sixty is the same read priced as an outright upset, and it counts once, not twice.

In-Game Bets

  • If Detroit leads by more than fourteen at the half. Release the moneyline and hold the points. Two scores down with a half left is still live for the spread and finished for the outright.
  • If New Orleans is level or ahead in the third quarter. Hold and add nothing. The projection had this inside a field goal and the game is now telling you the same thing at a worse price.
  • If Detroit scores on its first three possessions. Get out of both. Seven was the argument, and a start like that says the market read the gap correctly and we did not.

Bottom Line

Take New Orleans and the seven at . The better team on our card is getting a touchdown, in a number the market has held for two months. A lean, half a unit.
