Dallas scored 471 points last season, seventh in the NFL, and finished 7-9-1. That is what happens when you bolt the second-best passing offense in football onto the worst defense in it. Jerry Jones spent the offseason on the most aggressive defensive rebuild this franchise has attempted in years, and the market has already paid him for it in advance. I have not.

Key Storylines

  • The offense is not the problem and never was. Dallas threw for 266.3 yards a game, second in the NFL, ran for 125.6 (9th) and converted 41.1 percent of third downs (12th). Dak Prescott led the league in completions on his way to 4,552 yards, 30 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. What that means for the bet is uncomfortable for the Over: this offense already played close to its ceiling and still could not drag the team past .500. There is not another two wins hiding in it.
  • The defense was the worst in football and that is not hyperbole. Dallas allowed 511 points, 30.1 a game, 32nd of 32. Every other team in the league kept more points off the board. The rebuild is real and Jones has been aggressive, but going from 32nd to league average is a two-year project at the best of times, and the Over needs most of it done by December.
  • Brian Schottenheimer is in year two, not year one. He was promoted from offensive coordinator in January 2025, is signed through 2028, and missed the playoffs in his first season. That matters both ways. Continuity in year two usually helps, which is a point for the Over. But he is an offensive coach whose offense finished seventh in scoring while his defense finished last, and the thing he is best at is already fixed.
  • The turnover margin is the strongest argument against us. Dallas finished minus nine, 29th in the league. That climbs toward zero for almost everybody, and it is worth close to a win on its own before anyone plays better. We are crediting it in full below. It still is not enough.
  • The protection was quietly good. The line allowed just 31 sacks, 11th in the league, behind a group featuring Tyler Smith on his third straight Pro Bowl. Prescott was not the one under siege last season. His defense was.

Win Total Analysis

The number is 9.5, with the Over at +105 and the Under at -125 as of August 6.

Dallas scored 471 and allowed 511, a minus-40 differential. The Pythagorean expectation on that is 7.7 wins against a line of 9.5, a gap of 1.8 wins our way. The 7-9-1 record is almost exactly what the points earned, so there is no luck to unwind in either direction.

Now credit the Over properly, because it has one very good input. A minus-nine turnover margin should climb, and that is worth roughly a win. Start at 7.7, add it, and you get about 8.7. The line is 9.5. Even after handing the Over its best argument in full, it is still short by most of a game.

The schedule is where the case closes. Warren Sharp has Dallas at 28th of the 32 teams, which on that scale means the fifth-hardest slate in the league. This is not a soft calendar that helps a rebuilding defense find its feet. It is one of the five worst draws in football, handed to the team that just gave up more points than anyone.

The price is fine rather than generous. You are laying -125, which needs about 56 percent, on a projection that lands roughly a win under the number.

The defensive rebuild works faster than rebuilds usually do. If Jones bought enough and the turnover margin snaps back hard, a defense that finishes 20th instead of 32nd is worth two wins by itself, and this offense is already good enough to convert them. That is the entire Over and it is not a fantasy.

The second risk is the one we always name with Dallas: this roster has more talent than its record. Prescott is playing well, the line is holding up, and teams with a top-two passing attack do not usually stay under .500 for long. He finished no lower than fourth in the league in dropbacks, pass attempts, passing yards and passing touchdowns, which is the profile of a quarterback who carries a team the moment the other side of the ball gives him anything at all.

Dallas draws August optimism every single year, and this year it has an actual story attached, so the number is more likely to drift up than down before Week 1.

The tell is points allowed, nothing else. If the defense is giving up 27 a game through five weeks, the rebuild has not landed and the Under is close to decided. If they are holding teams to 21, cut the position and take the small loss.

Division Odds

The NFC East runs through Philadelphia. Our Eagles preview takes their Under at 10.5 while acknowledging they are still the class of the division, and Washington is the team most likely to make it a race. Dallas at 9.5 is priced as a fringe contender in a division where it finished second at 7-9-1. We hold no Cowboys division position, and the six games inside it are exactly the ones a last-ranked defense cannot count on.

Best Futures Bets

  • Under 9.5 wins (-125): The lead play. A 7.7 scoreboard, a full win of turnover credit already granted, and the fifth-hardest schedule in the league on top.
  • Dak Prescott passing props (when posted): He led the NFL in completions and threw for 4,552 yards, largely because Dallas was behind so often. A defense that improves means fewer garbage-time attempts, so a season-long yardage line built off last year may be set too high.

  • Philadelphia in Week 7 and Week 12: Both meetings with the division winner land before the bye, and the second one is at home with the season still salvageable. The gap between these teams is one number: Philadelphia allowed 19.1 points a game and finished fifth, Dallas allowed 30.1 and finished 32nd. Our Eagles preview takes their Under at 10.5, so this is not a claim that Philadelphia is unbeatable. It is a claim that Dallas has to win a shootout twice against the one team in the division built to prevent one.
  • Washington in Week 2 and Week 18: The Commanders visit AT&T early and host the finale, which makes them the bookends of the whole season. Washington drew the fourth-hardest schedule in the league by Sharp’s projected win totals, one rung above Dallas at fifth, so both teams arrive in January carrying the same mileage. A Week 18 road game against a rested division rival with something left to play for is precisely where a nine-win season turns into an eight-win one.
  • New York in Week 1 and Week 17: Dallas opens on the road at the Giants, who ended last season by beating them 34-17 in Week 18 and have since handed the building to John Harbaugh. Opening at a division rival with a new staff and a quarterback in year two is the definition of a trap game, and the Under does not need Dallas to be bad here so much as slow. Drop this one and the nine-win path narrows on the first Sunday of the year.
  • The non-division draw is the real problem, and the shape is worse than the rank: Fifth-hardest in the league, but look at where it lands. Baltimore arrives in Week 3 at a neutral site in Brazil, then the back half stacks San Francisco in Week 10, a trip to Seattle in Week 13 and a visit to the Rams in Week 15. The only obvious breathers are Arizona in Week 8 and a Week 9 trip to face the Colts, and our Colts preview backs their Over at 7.5, so even that is not free. A defense rebuilding from 32nd needs soft opponents to find itself against. This calendar hands it four of the best offenses in football instead.

Bottom Line

The second-best passing offense in football, the worst defense in football, and the fifth-hardest schedule to carry both. Take the Under and let Dallas sell the rebuild to somebody else.

Why it connects
Two teams the board is paying for on a story and one it is ignoring. Dallas is priced for a defensive rebuild that has not happened yet and Baltimore for a quarterback who missed four games, while Minnesota sits at 8.5 with a top-ten defense and the second-worst turnover luck in the league. Three divisions across two conferences, all at BetMGM.
