Cincinnati and the three and a half, as a lean. We have the Bengals five wins clear of Tampa Bay and at home, but the line has not moved all summer.

5
Wins separating Cincinnati and Tampa Bay on our published season card, in a game priced at three and a half

The Matchup

  • Five wins is the widest gap in the early window. We published Cincinnati at eleven and six and Tampa Bay at six and eleven. Those are opposite records. One team we have in January and one we have out of it by Halloween.
  • Cincinnati has its receivers. Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins both came through the week practising and are tracking to play. The single biggest way this number gets beaten is the Bengals being short a pass catcher, and that risk did not materialise.
  • Tampa Bay also arrives close to whole. Emeka Egbuka came through a toe issue as a full participant and Rueben Bain was limited with a shoulder problem but is expected to go. This is not a case built on Tampa Bay being undermanned, and it is stronger for not needing to be.
  • Three and a half is a price for a coin flip between neighbours. It is not a price for a five game gap with home field on top. Somewhere in that difference is the market waiting to see whether Cincinnati is what it was, and we have already made that call in print.

The Number

Convert the five game gap, hand Cincinnati the two points a home stadium is worth, and the projection lands nearer seven than three and a half. The board is at three and a half. That is a disagreement of about a field goal on a game where we are laying rather than taking, which is the rarer and usually the more useful direction.

What the line has done is the reason this is a lean. We have recorded this game every day since July and it has not moved off Cincinnati by three and a half. The moneyline has barely shifted either. A five win gap in our numbers against a number that has held perfectly still for two months tells you the market has weighed the same rosters and is comfortable where it is.

The honest counterweight is that season win totals are a blunt instrument in a single September game, and ours tend to overstate the gap between good teams and poor ones. A six and eleven team is not six and eleven every Sunday. Confidence four, half a unit. I am leaving the moneyline alone, because minus one ninety eight asks you to win two out of three and the value in this game, such as it is, sits on the spread rather than in the outright.

In-Game Bets

  • If Tampa Bay scores touchdowns on its first two possessions. Get out. The one script that beats a five win gap is the weaker team playing its best half of the season immediately, and that is what it looks like.
  • If Cincinnati leads by more than a touchdown at the half. Hold and add nothing. Seven is roughly where our number had this game, so the price you would be laying now is the price we already said was fair.
  • If the game is inside three in the fourth quarter. The spread is finished. Do not hedge into a live number that is worse than the read you started with.

Bottom Line

Lay the three and a half with Cincinnati at . Five wins better on our card, at home, healthy at receiver, in a number that has not moved all summer. A lean, half a unit.
