Tampa Bay started 6-2, finished 2-7, and the board is still pricing the first half. Mike Evans is a 49er now, which means the 7.7 Pythagorean was earned by a roster that no longer exists. Add a plus-seven turnover margin with nowhere to go but down and the effective number is 7.2. The line is 8.5.

Seasons Mike Evans spent in Tampa Bay. The franchise's all-time leading receiver is now a 49er and his 11 touchdowns in 11 games last year walked out with him

Key Storylines

  • Evans caught 74 passes for 1,004 yards and scored 11 touchdowns in eleven games despite a broken collarbone, and then the franchise let him walk. San Francisco signed him to a three-year deal worth $60.4 million. That ended his NFL-record streak of eleven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, all in Tampa Bay. The most any player still on the roster caught last season was 62. Emeka Egbuka posted those 62 catches and 930 yards but produced them as a secondary option while Evans drew the top coverage assignment. Now Egbuka inherits that coverage. Chris Godwin played nine games after a fibula injury and put up a career-worst 33 catches. Jalen McMillan fractured three vertebrae in the preseason and played four games. Cade Otton is a reliable tight end who caught 59 passes for 572 yards, but he is not replacing what Evans did in the red zone. The passing game lost its anchor and the front office responded by drafting Ted Hurst from Georgia State in the third round.
  • The 6-2 start was the mirage and the 2-7 finish was the real football team. Calijah Kancey tore his pectoral muscle in Week 3 and missed the rest of the year after leading the team with 7.5 sacks in 2024. Cody Mauch’s knee ended his season in Week 2. The offensive line cycled through nine different starting combinations. Evans broke his collarbone. Godwin went down with the fibula. McMillan was already out. Bucky Irving missed seven games with a shoulder injury and a Lisfranc sprain. Baker Mayfield played all seventeen but appeared on the injury report for ten of them, grinding through a sprained PCL and a shoulder problem that followed him into January. The injuries explain the collapse. I am not disputing that. What I am disputing is the idea that health regression means this team clears 8.5 without the best player it had when the scoreboard was being kept.
  • Zac Robinson is the new offensive coordinator and Todd Bowles decided to call the defense himself rather than hire a replacement. Robinson spent two seasons as Atlanta’s offensive coordinator under Raheem Morris. The Falcons went 8-9 under that staff. Morris got fired. Robinson came to Tampa Bay, reportedly at Mayfield’s urging from their brief overlap on the 2022 Rams staff. The optimistic read is that Robinson installs a system Mayfield already understands. The pessimistic read is that Robinson arrives from a coaching staff that went 8-9 and got cleaned out. On the other side of the ball, Bowles fired first-year DC Josh Grizzard and five assistants in January. Rather than hiring an external coordinator, Bowles is running the defense himself. His background is on that side and his scheme knowledge is real. But a head coach calling his own defense while managing a new play-caller and a quarterback in a contract year has a lot of moving parts for one person to hold.
  • The Pythagorean says 7.7 wins and the turnover margin says that number is still too generous. Tampa Bay scored 380 points and allowed 411, a differential of minus-31 that translates to roughly 7.7 expected wins. The line is 8.5. That gap of -0.8 already favors the Under before any adjustments. The turnover margin of plus-7 is a genuine headwind. Tampa Bay generated 23 takeaways against 16 giveaways, a margin that will regress toward zero and cost roughly half a win in production that was partly luck-driven. The effective win total drops to about 7.2, a full 1.3 wins below where the books have this team. The health regression the Over case is built on would need to be worth more than a win and a half just to get the number back to 8.5. Kancey coming back helps the pass rush. A healthy offensive line helps the protection. But Evans leaving and David’s retirement subtract at least as much as those additions provide.

Win Total Analysis

The Over case is real and I am going to write it fairly before I explain why I am not taking it.

The injuries explain 2025. Nine offensive line combinations. The best interior defender gone in Week 3. The franchise receiver out for six games. The starting running back missing seven. A quarterback who appeared on the injury report for ten of seventeen starts. If this team is anywhere near healthy in 2026, it should be better than the 7.7 wins the Pythagorean measured. Kancey comes back after 7.5 sacks and gives the defensive line what it lacked all season. First-round pick Rueben Bain Jr. from Miami joins the edge rotation. The offensive line gets Mauch back for a full year. Godwin and McMillan play full campaigns for the first time. The NFC South sends six games against teams carrying lines between 6.5 and 7.5. A healthy version of this roster should clear 8.5.

Here is where the argument breaks.

Evans is gone and nobody replaced him. Say that again, because the market seems to have moved past it. Evans scored eleven touchdowns in eleven games while playing through a broken collarbone in his twelfth NFL season. He did it because Egbuka and Godwin existed as secondary options that pulled defensive attention away from the red zone. Now Egbuka is the primary option. The coverage rotates to him. The red-zone targets that went to Evans go to a 23-year-old who has never been the first read on a goal-line fade. The Buccaneers did not sign a free agent receiver to fill the hole. They drafted a third-round wideout from Georgia State. That is the front office’s answer to the biggest departure in franchise history.

Lavonte David retired after fourteen seasons. Jamel Dean left for Pittsburgh after posting a career-high three interceptions. Both were central to how the defense held opponents to 411 points. When the players who produced the points leave, the number stops being useful. Evans produced points. David and Dean prevented them. Their production is baked into the 380 and 411 that the model measured. The model is describing a team that has been taken apart.

The turnover margin seals it. Plus-7 is a genuine headwind and regression toward zero is mechanical. That alone drops the effective expected wins to 7.2. The health regression is worth perhaps a win. The departures cost at least a win. The math puts the number somewhere between 7 and 7.5. The line is 8.5. Take the Under.

Division Odds

Tampa Bay is the NFC South favorite at +180. New Orleans sits at +240. Carolina is +325. Atlanta is +400. Three of those four teams finished 8-9 last year. Carolina won a three-way tiebreaker to take the division title. Tampa Bay and Atlanta both went home. The Saints went 6-11. Nobody ran away with the NFC South in 2025 and nobody is expected to run away with it this year. Our Falcons preview backs Atlanta to win the division at +400, with two-time Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski running the building and an elite pass rush returning its core. If the Falcons are the value play in the NFC South, the Bucs at +180 are not worth chasing. Do not bet the division here. The Under on the win total is the play.

Best Futures Bets

  • Under 8.5 wins (-130): The entire play. A team that lost its franchise receiver after twelve seasons and saw its most experienced defenders leave or retire is not winning 9 games in its first year without them. The Pythagorean says 7.7 with Evans on the roster. Without him, the math says 7 or below. The -130 is not plus money, but it is better than the -140 some of the tighter Unders on this board carry.

  • Mayfield Under 3,599.5 passing yards (-120): Evans is gone. The target tree lost its deepest branch. Robinson’s offense in Atlanta was not a high-volume passing attack. If the Bucs lean on a healthy Irving and the ground game, Mayfield’s volume drops and the yardage follows. Watch for the BetMGM number when it posts.

The Under at -130 is the play. The Mayfield yardage is a small sprinkle if you want more action on the same idea. Do not build a season plan around Tampa Bay missing the playoffs at -150. That juice is too heavy for a team that is still the division favorite.

Schedule Landmines

Weeks 1-4Three-game homestand after @CIN
Weeks 5-9Road-heavy middle stretch
Weeks 11-14@DET and @BAL gauntlet
Weeks 15-18NFC South finish
  • Weeks 11 and 14 are the two games the Under is built on. At Detroit (10.5 line) and at Baltimore (11.5 line), separated by a Panthers home game and a Chargers home game. Road games against two of the five best teams on the board back to back with soft home dates. A 6-4 team entering this stretch exits at 6-6 or worse without doing anything wrong. The Under does not need a collapse. It needs Tampa Bay to lose the games it is supposed to lose.
  • The three-game homestand in Weeks 2 through 4 is where the Over has to start building or it never will. The Browns visit in Week 2, followed by the Vikings and the Packers. Cleveland carries a 5.5 line and that game is close to a must-win for anyone backing the Over. Minnesota and Green Bay are real tests at Raymond James Stadium. Win two of three and the Over has a pulse. Lose two and the math is already compressing before the bye arrives in Week 10.
  • Week 1 at Cincinnati is the worst possible debut for a new offensive coordinator. Robinson calling his first game as a Tampa Bay play-caller on the road against Joe Burrow and a 9.5-line team. The Bengals reached the AFC Championship two years ago and still have one of the best quarterbacks in football. A loss here is survivable. A bad loss rewrites the narrative heading into the homestand.
  • Three of the final four games are NFC South opponents and those results decide the season. Saints at home in Week 15, at Atlanta in Week 16, Rams at home in Week 17, at New Orleans in Week 18. The Rams are the landmine in that stretch. Los Angeles carries an 11.5 line and could be fighting for playoff seeding in late December. If Tampa Bay is sitting at 6-8 heading into the final month, running the table through a team that good is not how 8.5 lines get cleared. The Under needs five losses in the final nine games. Tampa Bay lost seven of nine to close last season.

Bottom Line

The Pythagorean says 7.7 with Evans on the roster and Evans is now a 49er. The turnover margin drops the effective number to 7.2. The line is 8.5. Take the Under at -130 and trust the math over the market’s memory of a team that started 6-2 and finished 2-7.
