Six points is two more than this game deserves. Give me Duke and the points in Champaign, and there are two separate reasons for it, which is more than most games on this card can say.
The Matchup
- These teams are closer than six points and the ratings say so. After Week 1 the numbers moved Duke up and Illinois down, which leaves under a point between them before home field is applied. Champaign is worth two and a half. That projects the Illini by a field goal in a game where the board wants six.
- Then the injuries, which point the same way. Bret Bielema has confirmed that starting right guard Brandon Henderson is out with a lower leg issue and that receiver Jayshon Platt is unavailable. Two starters, announced this week, on the side being asked to lay the number.
- Interior injuries cost more than a depth chart suggests. A right guard is the least glamorous name on any injury report and one of the most expensive. Push up the middle is what breaks a pocket before a quarterback can climb it, and a replacement guard in his first start of the season is a soft spot a good front finds inside a quarter.
- Duke is not a charity case. This is a Power Four road trip for a program that recruits well enough to hang, and six is the sort of number you lay against a team you expect to control rather than one patching an offensive line on Thursday.
The Number
SP+ has these two within a point of each other on neutral ground. Add the two and a half that Champaign is worth and the projection is Illinois by about three and a half. The board is at six. That is two and a half points of value on the visitor before anybody’s health is considered.
That distinction matters, and it is why this page reads differently than it would have a few days ago. On the preseason ratings the numbers actually favoured Illinois by a point, and taking Duke meant overriding them on the strength of the injury report. Our rule allows that, narrowly, when a starter goes down in a game priced inside ten points. But an override is always a weaker thing than a number, and now there is no override to make: the updated ratings put Duke on the correct side by themselves, and the two missing starters sit on top of that rather than underneath it.
Two independent reasons pointing one way is the strongest structure a pick can have, and it is worth more than either alone. One unit on the points. The moneyline at around plus one eighty five is the same opinion at a longer price rather than a separate read, and it counts once.
In-Game Bets
- If Illinois runs for two first downs on the opening drive. Get out of both. The replacement guard is holding and half the case is gone before the first television timeout.
- If Duke gets pressure up the middle twice in the first quarter. Hold everything and stop watching the spread. That is the exact mechanism the play is built on.
- If Illinois leads by more than ten at half. Release both. Six was the right number and both reasons were wrong together, which is the risk you take when they share a field.
Bottom Line
Take Duke and the six at . The ratings make this a field goal game and the home team is short a starting guard and a receiver. One unit.
