The last two Cy-Hawks came down to a 54 yard field goal in the final minute. I am laying two touchdowns anyway, and I will tell you exactly why that is uncomfortable.

54
Yards on the game-winning field goal in each of the last two Cy-Hawk games, both from the same Iowa State kicker

The Matchup

  • The ratings gap here is not a rivalry gap. The updated numbers have Iowa nearly fifteen points clear of Iowa State before Kinnick is added, which is a wider separation than this series has felt in years. The board is asking for fourteen, less than the projection, and that is the entire reason this play exists.
  • Both teams moved up after Week 1 and the gap survived. Iowa State beat Southeast Missouri State 38 to 10 with a new quarterback accounting for four touchdowns, and the ratings gave them credit for it. Iowa gained more. When both sides of a matchup improve and the separation holds, the number is telling you something durable rather than something noisy.
  • The kicker is why this number is not higher. Iowa State has a kicker who has hit the game-winner in each of the last two meetings, from 54 yards both times. Markets remember that. A close finish is priced into fourteen in a way it would not be between two strangers.
  • Iowa has one absence worth naming. Safety Tyler Brown, the James Madison transfer expected to start, missed the opener with a lingering soft-tissue problem. It is a real subtraction from the side laying the points.

The Number

SP+ separates these two by just under fifteen points, and Kinnick is worth two and a half on top, which projects Iowa by better than seventeen. Fourteen is on offer. That is three and a half points of value on the favourite, and it is the sort of edge that only appears in a rivalry game because the rivalry itself is doing the pricing.

Now the uncomfortable part, said plainly. Two years running this game has ended with a 54 yard kick in the last minute, and I am about to ask you to lay two touchdowns into that. Every instinct I have says a rivalry stays close. Our rule is that instinct does not move a number without a same-week injury to a starter in a game priced inside ten points, and this is a fourteen point spread with no such news. A pattern of close finishes is not a starter injury, and the last time I overrode a number on a feeling it cost us.

So this is the numbers taken straight, with the discomfort on the record rather than buried. One unit and a middling confidence for a reason. If you would rather sit this one out because two touchdowns in a rivalry is more than you want to hold, that is a defensible read and I would not argue with you.

In-Game Bets

  • If Iowa State scores first and holds a lead into the second quarter. Get out. A rivalry underdog with early belief is the exact profile that produces the last-minute kick, and fourteen becomes unholdable.
  • If Iowa leads by 17 or more at half. Hold and do nothing else. The projection is playing out and adding at a worse number is how a good read turns into a bad ticket.
  • If the game reaches the fourth quarter inside ten. The spread is finished. Do not add and do not hedge into a kicker who has already beaten this exact situation twice.

Bottom Line

Lay the fourteen with Iowa at . Seventeen points of projection against a fourteen point ask, in a rivalry that is pricing its own history. One unit, and I am not pretending it is comfortable.
