I had this game the other way and the ratings changed my mind. Lay the five and a half with Oklahoma. The update after Week 1 moved the gap to the Sooners’ side and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

Points the Oklahoma and Michigan ratings moved toward Oklahoma once Week 1 results were added

The Matchup

  • The ratings moved, not just the poll. Michigan fell out of the top 25 after an unconvincing win over Western Michigan, and it would be easy to call that a voter overreaction. It is not only voters. The updated numbers dropped Michigan by nearly five points and lifted Oklahoma by three, a swing of almost eight points in this one matchup, and those are performance adjustments rather than opinions.
  • John Mateer looked the part. He completed 11 of 17 for 225 yards in the opener against UTEP inside an offense that leaned on multiple tight ends. It was UTEP, so weight it accordingly, but the Sooners did what a good team is supposed to do to a bad one and Michigan did not.
  • Bryce Underwood is still the starter and that is now the risk, not the case. Kyle Whittingham has said plainly that no job is permanent and that Underwood has to be better than he was. A young quarterback at home with something to prove is exactly the profile that beats a number like this, and it is why this is a small play rather than a confident one.
  • Michigan also got discouraging news on a starting safety. In a game priced inside a touchdown that matters, and it runs the same direction as everything else on this page.

The Number

SP+ now separates these two by nine and a half points before home field. Hand Michigan the two and a half that Ann Arbor is worth and the projection lands on Oklahoma by seven. The board is asking for five and a half. That is a point and a half of value on the favourite, which is a genuine edge and a modest one.

Here is the part worth being straight about. On the preseason ratings this same calculation produced Michigan by a point, and the case wrote itself: a poll drop is not a roster change, so take the home dog. Then the ratings were updated with Week 1 in them and the gap moved almost eight points. The old answer was built on numbers that no longer describe these teams. Changing sides when the evidence changes is the entire point of having evidence, and a page that hides the reversal is selling you consistency instead of accuracy.

Size it small. A point and a half is not a stand, and the thing that would beat it is the most likely thing on the field: a home quarterback playing better than he did a week ago. One unit. I am leaving the moneyline alone here, because minus two fifteen asks you to be right better than two times in three and a point and a half of edge does not get you close to that.

In-Game Bets

  • If Underwood completes his first five passes. Get out. The entire risk on this ticket is a young starter settling early at home, and that is what it looks like.
  • If Oklahoma scores on three of its first four possessions. Hold and stop watching. The tight end sets are working and five and a half stops being the question.
  • If Michigan is within one score entering the fourth. Do not add. A five and a half point favourite in a one score fourth quarter is a coin flip you have already paid for.

Bottom Line

Lay the five and a half with Oklahoma at . The updated ratings make this Oklahoma by seven and the board wants five and a half. Small edge, small stake, and an honest reversal from where this page started the week.
