Clemson opened last season ranked fourth and finished 7-6. The quarterback who was supposed to go first overall went in the fourth round. The books want eight wins this time, and I am taking the plus money on the Under, lightly.
Key Storylines
- Last season was not a dip, it was a collapse. Clemson began the year ranked fourth in the preseason poll with an experienced roster and a quarterback many had going first overall. It ended 7-6, outside the ACC championship game for only the third time in eleven years under Dabo Swinney, with a 22-10 Pinstripe Bowl loss to Penn State to finish.
- The offense is being rebuilt and the number is stark. Cade Klubnik fell to the fourth round of the draft. Christopher Vizzina is the frontrunner after three years behind him, with freshman Tait Reynolds, whom Swinney has called a unicorn, pushing him in camp. Clemson returns just 46 percent of its offensive production, 94th in the country. Chad Morris is back calling plays, a job he last held here from 2011 to 2014. T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. return at receiver, which helps.
- Two starters are back on the line, and everybody else is auditioning. Guards Collin Sadler and Harris Sewell, nine starts apiece last year, are the holdovers, with Elyjah Thurmond back after an injury limited him to three games. Offensive line coach Matt Luke said it plainly this summer: everybody is fighting for a spot. The 2025 group allowed about a sack and a half a game, middle of the country, and it is being replaced three-fifths over in the same offseason the quarterback changes.
- The defense is the reason this is a light play and not a firm one. That side returns 61 percent, 26th nationally, with linebacker Sammy Brown back after 106 tackles and five sacks and defensive end Will Heldt after a team-leading 7.5. Tom Allen is in his second year running it, SP+ projects the unit 18th in the country against a 46th-ranked offense, and the portal class, the largest in program history, added edge rushers London Merritt, Markus Strong and CJ Wesley around Heldt and Jaheim Lawson. A good defense keeps a mediocre team in games it has no business winning, and eight wins is not a high bar.
- It opens in Baton Rouge. Clemson’s season starts on September 5 at LSU, then Miami visits on October 3 and South Carolina closes it at home. Three genuinely hard games, and the first one arrives before anybody knows what this offense is. Kicker Nolan Hauser is back, which matters in a season that projects to a lot of one-score games.
Win Total Analysis
The number is 7.5, with the Under at +135 and the Over at -160.
I am going to be straight about this one. It is close, and the Over is not a bad bet.
Sort the schedule. Georgia Southern and Charleston Southern are two wins, and Charleston Southern is an FCS opponent. A Friday night trip to Cal, a trip to Syracuse, Georgia Tech at home and a Friday trip to Duke are four more that Clemson should handle. That is six.
So the Over needs two wins from six: at LSU, North Carolina, Miami, at Florida State, Virginia Tech and South Carolina. The Under needs Clemson to lose five of twelve. Two from six is not a demanding ask, and three of those six are in Death Valley.
Now the projection. SP+, the ESPN power rating this series leans on, has Clemson 23rd and projects 7.9 wins. Adjusted for the rating’s market bias, that is about 8.05 against a line of 7.5, a lean of half a win toward the Over. And the Over at -160 charges exactly that lean: laying -160 asks you to be right about three times in five, which is roughly where the projection puts it. Neither side of this market carries an edge.
When that happens, our rule is to take the side that pays, at confidence two and a light stake, and to say so plainly. This is a price bet, not a football opinion. The 94th-ranked returning offense is a genuine reason to doubt the first month, and +135 is a fair price for doubting it. It is a small edge and I am not going to inflate it.
Take the Under at +135, and keep the stake small.
ACC Picture
BetMGM has Clemson at +750 to reach the playoff and -1400 to miss it. That is a market giving a program with four national championship game appearances this century roughly a one-in-eight chance of making a twelve-team field.
It is also probably right. Miami is seventh in the country and Clemson is 23rd, and the Tigers have to visit Florida State and host the Hurricanes. The route to Charlotte runs directly through teams rated well above them.
Virginia Tech visits on October 24 in James Franklin’s first season in Blacksburg, which is its own subplot given who Penn State sent home in October and who beat Clemson in the bowl.
Best Futures Bets
- Under 7.5 wins (+135): The play, kept light at confidence two, and I will not oversell it. The Over needs two wins from six and Clemson will be favored in at least two of those six. I am on this side because neither side has an edge and this one pays plus money.
- Over 7.5 wins (-160): Perfectly defensible, and the projection leans this way. Swinney has called last season an aberration, the defense returns 61 percent, and eight wins from this schedule is not a stretch for a healthy Clemson. If Vizzina is ready in September, this is the side that cashes.
- To reach the playoff (+750): Pass, but it is the honest longshot on the board. Clemson would need something like eleven wins and an ACC title, which requires beating Miami and winning in Tallahassee.
Schedule Landmines
Weeks 1-4: Baton Rouge on September 5 is a brutal opener for a new quarterback, and LSU has a new staff of its own with plenty to prove. Georgia Southern follows, then North Carolina visits on September 19, then a Friday night trip to Berkeley. A 2-2 start is entirely plausible and would end the Over conversation early.
Weeks 5-8: Miami comes to Memorial Stadium on October 3, and the Hurricanes are the seventh-rated team in the country. Then the bye, Charleston Southern, and Virginia Tech at home on October 24. Two of these three are wins Clemson needs banked.
Weeks 9-11: Tallahassee on Halloween, then a trip to Syracuse, then Georgia Tech at home. Florida State away is the sort of rivalry game that ignores the ratings, and the dome in Syracuse has embarrassed better teams than this one.
Weeks 12-13: A Friday night at Duke on November 20, then the Palmetto Bowl at home on November 28. That rivalry has swung both ways in recent years and it is a genuinely live game. If Clemson arrives here on seven wins, this ticket goes to the final weekend.
Bottom Line
A preseason top-five team that went 7-6, a quarterback who slid to the fourth round, and an offense returning the 94th-most production in the country behind a line with two starters back. The defense is good enough that eight wins is very much reachable, and the projection leans that way by half a win. The price charges for all of it. No edge either side, so I take the side that pays, at confidence two. Under 7.5 at +135, small.
