Texas has lost two straight, both by three points. No. 7 Ole Miss is 5-1 and just beat Missouri 31-3. And the Rebels are getting a field goal and the hook in Austin? Hotty Toddy. I’ll take the points.
The Matchup
- Ole Miss is rolling. The Rebels are 5-1, with wins over LSU 32-24, Vanderbilt 52-17 and Missouri 31-3. Their only loss was 52-28 at Florida.
- Texas is sliding. The No. 19 Longhorns are 4-2 and lost 27-24 to Oklahoma and 27-24 to Florida in their last two games.
- Texas is short-handed. Edge rusher Colin Simmons, the nation’s leading sacker, is out, and running back Hollywood Smothers is doubtful. Arch Manning is expected to start, but reports say he’s on a short leash, with K.J. Lacey getting first-team reps.
- Kickoff. 7:30 PM ET at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, on ABC.
The Number
The board makes Texas a field goal favorite at home, plus the hook. Ole Miss has the better record and the better recent form, and three and a half covers a field-goal loss.
The honest case against: Texas lost both games by a field goal, so the Longhorns aren’t far off, and Austin at night is a tough place to play. It’s a Game Pick, a lean, and like every pick we post, it lands on the receipts page win or lose. Our college ratings haven’t beaten the lines in testing, so every college pick is a lean.
Bottom Line
Take Ole Miss plus three and a half at . Lean. The better team, getting the hook. Hotty Toddy.
