Spencer Rattler won one game in eight starts and lost the job. The books moved the number one win. One. We are taking the Over.
Key Storylines
- Rattler went 1-7 in eight starts and the Pythagorean measured a 6.3-win team with him behind center. Shough went 5-4 with a 91.3 rating and the backward model has no way to separate the two. That is the problem with the 6.3 anchor. It is measuring a composite of two different teams. Rattler completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 1,586 yards and 8 touchdowns against 5 interceptions. Shough completed 67.6 percent for 2,384 yards and 10 touchdowns against 6 interceptions in nine starts. The completion percentages are nearly identical. The results were not. Shough moved the pocket and converted third downs at a rate Rattler never approached, putting together a four-game win streak in December that nobody in New Orleans had seen since Brees. The front office committed to him in January. The market followed. Nobody is arguing that Rattler’s 1-7 describes the 2026 Saints. The question is whether Shough’s 5-4 does.
- The front office looked at a 28th-ranked scoring offense that allowed 49 sacks and fixed both sides of the problem in one offseason. Travis Etienne signed from Jacksonville for four years and $52 million after rushing for 1,107 yards with 13 total touchdowns in 2025. David Edwards signed from Buffalo for four years and $61 million to play left guard and shore up a line that gave up those 49 sacks. Those two signings alone address the two biggest weaknesses on offense. Jordyn Tyson was the eighth overall pick from Arizona State and has been running first-team routes since the first day of camp. Chris Olave put up a career-high 100 catches for 1,163 yards and scored 9 touchdowns. He earned second-team All-Pro honors and signed a four-year extension worth up to $132 million. He dealt with a blood clot in his lung after Week 18 but was cleared before camp and has been a full participant since. The weapons around Shough in 2026 are not the weapons around Rattler in September.
- The defense lost Demario Davis and Alontae Taylor in free agency, then watched Bryan Bresee tear his ACL on the first day of camp. Davis was the emotional center of the unit and signed with the Jets. Taylor posted a career year at cornerback and left for Tennessee on a $60 million deal. Those two departures alone would push a line down. Then Bresee tore his ACL and erased the starting nose tackle from the depth chart. The counterweight is what stayed. Cam Jordan re-signed for a farewell season after 10.5 sacks at age 36 and Chase Young had 10 sacks in 12 games, giving the edge rush the same production that generated 45 sacks a year ago. Kool-Aid McKinstry broke out in the secondary with 17 passes defensed and 3 interceptions. Staley’s defense ranked 9th in yards allowed in 2025. The holes are real. This is not a gutted defense.
- The turnover margin of minus-4 is a quiet tailwind and the schedule pushes the same way. New Orleans generated 20 takeaways against 24 giveaways. That minus-4 should regress toward zero and hand back roughly a quarter win that last season’s turnover luck took away. The effective Pythagorean rises from 6.3 to about 6.6, still short of the number. But the 2026 schedule is the third-easiest in the NFL per Warren Sharp as of August. That is a structural advantage the backward model cannot price. Six division games against teams carrying lines between 6.5 and 8.5 give the Saints the kind of November and December that turns close calls into wins. The QB upgrade and the schedule push the number up. The turnover regression pushes it back. Those two forces together outweigh what the regression takes away.
Win Total Analysis
The Under case starts with cold numbers. The Pythagorean says 6.3. The turnover margin adds a tailwind that lifts the effective number to about 6.6. The line is 7.5. That is a gap of more than a win and a half. The defensive losses make it wider. Davis and Taylor left in free agency. Bresee tore his ACL in camp. The line moved from 6.5 to 7.5 after the draft, pricing in the improvement before a snap was played. And here is the detail the Over backers have to sit with: none of Shough’s five wins came against a team with a winning record. The four-game December streak went through Tampa Bay and Carolina at 8-9, then the Jets and Tennessee. His 91.3 rating looks different when you consider the caliber of defense he was facing.
Here is why I take the other side.
The 6.3 Pythagorean was measured with Rattler behind center for eight games. He went 1-7. Under Shough the offense was a different unit. The front office spent the offseason reinforcing that difference. Etienne gives the backfield a lead runner who just posted 1,107 yards and 13 touchdowns. Edwards gives the line a starting-caliber guard who should help with the 49-sack problem that defined the Rattler months. Those two signings alone address the two biggest weaknesses on offense. Tyson was the eighth overall pick and has been running first-team routes since camp. The offense that scored 18 points per game was the Rattler offense. The Shough offense, with these upgrades, is not the same operation.
The schedule seals it. Third-easiest in the NFL per Warren Sharp as of August. Six division games against teams with lines between 6.5 and 8.5 give New Orleans a winnable November and December even if September starts slow. The opening two weeks are brutal. At Detroit and at Baltimore. I am budgeting two losses there. The rest of the calendar cooperates.
Moore is in Year 2. He came from Philadelphia’s Super Bowl-winning coaching staff. Staley’s defense ranked ninth in yards allowed despite the offense leaving it on the field all year. Shough is 24 with a full offseason as the starter and first-team reps he never had last year. None of his wins came against winning teams and I am not pretending that does not matter. It does. That is why the confidence is a 3 and not higher. But the schedule and the offensive upgrades are real, and -125 is not asking you to lay heavy juice. Take the Over.
Division Odds
Tampa Bay is the NFC South favorite at +180. New Orleans sits second at +240. Carolina is +325. Atlanta is +400. Our Falcons preview backs Atlanta at +400 with Kevin Stefanski running the building. Our Buccaneers preview backs the Under on Tampa Bay’s win total. The Saints at +240 are the second choice in a division where three teams finished 8-9 last year and nobody ran away with anything. I am not taking a division position here. The Over on the win total is enough. If Shough proves he can beat winning teams, the division price will look different in October.
Best Futures Bets
- Over 7.5 wins (-125): The entire play. The Pythagorean says 6.3 but the number was measured with Rattler starting half the games. Shough went 5-4 with an offensive roster that has been completely retooled. Third-easiest schedule in football. The -125 is moderate juice, but the gap between the 2025 Saints and the 2026 Saints is wider than the price implies.
- To make playoffs (+185): Eight wins gets you into the conversation in the NFC. The Panthers made the playoffs at 8-9 last year in a division nobody else wanted to win. The Saints have the third-easiest schedule and a coaching staff in Year 2 with its own quarterback. Small sprinkle on a path the division already proved is open.
The Over at -125 is the play. Small sprinkle on the playoffs at +185 if you believe in the second-year jump. Do not reach for the division at +240. This team has not beaten a winning opponent yet. The confidence is a 3 for a reason. But the schedule and the roster work in the same direction.
Schedule Landmines
- Weeks 1 and 2 are the two games the Under gets for free. At Detroit and at Baltimore. Road games against two of the three best teams on the board in the first two weeks of the season. Detroit carries a 10.5 line. Baltimore carries 11.5. Starting 0-2 is not a worst case. It is the expected case. Budget the losses and move on. The Over does not need September. It needs December.
- The post-bye stretch from Weeks 9 through 10 is where the Over starts building. Cleveland at home carrying a 5.5 line and Carolina at home carrying 6.5. Two of the softest opponents on the board in back-to-back home games coming out of a Week 8 bye. If New Orleans cannot go 2-0 here, the Over was wrong from the start.
- Weeks 11 and 12 are the season-defining road trip. At Chicago and at Cincinnati on consecutive weeks. Both carry 9.5 lines. Going 1-1 is survivable. Going 0-2 makes the math compress badly heading into December. This is the stretch that separates a 7-win team from a 6-win team.
- Three of the final four games are NFC South opponents and those results decide the Over. At Tampa Bay in Week 15, Cardinals at home in Week 16, at Atlanta in Week 17, Buccaneers at home in Week 18. The Cardinals game is the softest date on the closing calendar. If New Orleans is sitting at 5-8 heading into the final stretch, three wins in the final four gets the Over at 8-9. The closing schedule is built for a team that needs 8.
Bottom Line
The Pythagorean says 6.3 but the Pythagorean was measuring Spencer Rattler’s offense for half the season. Shough went 5-4 with a 91.3 rating and the front office spent the offseason building around him. Third-easiest schedule in football. Take the Over at -125 and let the calendar do the work.
