The Rams are laying three and a half as the home team in a stadium eight thousand miles from Los Angeles. Give me San Francisco and the points. Somebody is being charged for a home field that does not exist.
The Matchup
- The venue is the entire pick. This is the first regular season NFL game ever played in Australia, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with a 10:35 in the morning local start on Friday. The Rams are the designated home team, which is a scheduling label and nothing more. Both of these teams fly out of California and land in the same unfamiliar building.
- Aaron Donald is not on the trip. He came back after two years away, spent his first fortnight on the Commissioner Exempt List, and the Rams have decided to bring him along slowly rather than fly him across the Pacific for a 10:35 in the morning kickoff. He is out. Whatever you think a 35 year old returning from two seasons off is worth, it is not zero, and it is coming off the favourite.
- San Francisco’s report reads better than the headline count. Nine players were limited and one did not participate. Nick Bosa was limited with a knee and will play. George Kittle was limited. Christian McCaffrey practised in full uniform. Sam Okuayinonu is out with a broken foot, and James Thompson Jr. is the lone non-participant with a hamstring. The 49ers are arriving close to whole.
- That last line needs a correction. Alfred Collins tore up his knee at practice in Melbourne on Tuesday and he is done for the year. Okuayinonu was already on injured reserve, so that is two starting linemen gone before the opener. San Francisco is not arriving close to whole any more. It cuts against our side and this edge got thinner. The pick holds.
- Our own numbers already have this tight. We published the Rams at eleven and six and San Francisco at ten and seven. One win apart across a full season is about two points on a neutral field, and a neutral field is precisely what the MCG is.
The Number
Run our projection and this game comes out around Los Angeles by two. Take the two teams’ published win totals, convert the one game gap between them, and then decline to add the two points a home team normally earns, because there is no home team here in any sense that matters. Nobody sleeps in their own bed, nobody hears their own crowd, and nobody knows the sight lines. The board is asking for three and a half. That is a point and a half of home field being sold in a city where neither side has ever played.
The travel cuts both ways and that is fine, because both sides pay it equally. Two West Coast teams, the same flight, the same week of preparation. The injury news does not cut both ways. The Rams left a returning defensive lineman at home and San Francisco brought a healthy Nick Bosa.
One position, and a modest one. A point and a half is real but small, so this is a single unit. The moneyline at around plus one seventy is the same opinion at a longer price, not an independent read, and it counts once. Understand what you are buying: the Rams can win this game by a field goal and the ticket still cashes. I am not arguing San Francisco is the better team. I am arguing three and a half is too many between two rosters this close, on a field neither one of them owns.
In-Game Bets
- If the Rams score on their first two possessions. Get off both. The long trip is affecting the wrong team and the neutral site argument has stopped paying.
- If Nick Bosa leaves the game. Get out immediately. He is the reason the health comparison favours San Francisco, and without him the front that has to slow Matthew Stafford is a different unit.
- If Puka Nacua is limited or exits early. Hold both and stop looking. He was already managing a core issue coming in, and a thinner Rams passing game is exactly the outcome the points are built for.
Bottom Line
Take San Francisco and the three and a half at . One win separates these teams on our card, the favourite left a returning starter at home, and the board is charging for a home field that is on the other side of the world.
