Dallas lost a starting guard to surgery this week and the number never moved. Give me the Giants and the three at home, on the night a new head coach gets his first look at a division rival.

6
Weeks Dallas may be without left guard Tyler Smith, who had thumb surgery and opens the season on injured reserve

The Matchup

  • Tyler Smith is on injured reserve and that is the news the price ignored. The Dallas left guard had thumb surgery and is expected to miss four to six weeks, so he is out for the opener and for at least the first month. T.J. Bass takes the job. An interior starter going down in the same week as the game, in a game priced inside a field goal, is the exact circumstance where we move off a preseason number.
  • John Harbaugh opens his tenure in prime time. The Giants begin a new era at MetLife on national television against the team the division is measured against. Openers under a new staff are noisy in both directions, and the noise is worth more to a home underdog than to a favourite that has to travel and win by four.
  • Malik Nabers is trending toward playing. He is working back from a torn ACL and the reporting out of camp points to him suiting up. If he plays, the Giants have their number one receiver for a game the board priced as though they might not.
  • Our card already rates the Giants ahead over a full season. We published New York at eight and nine and Dallas at six and eleven. Two wins of separation, with the better team at home, is not a profile that should be laying points anywhere.

The Number

Take our two published win totals, convert the two game gap, add the usual two points for playing at MetLife, and this game projects as the Giants by about six. The board has Dallas by three. That is a nine point disagreement, which is the widest gap between our numbers and the market anywhere on the Week 1 card, and it is the reason this game is featured rather than tucked into a list.

An interior lineman is the least glamorous name on an injury report and routinely the most expensive one. Smith plays left guard, which is the job that absorbs pressure up the middle, and pressure up the middle is what moves a quarterback off his spot before he can step into a throw. T.J. Bass is a capable replacement and he is still a replacement, in his first start of the season, on the road, at night, in a loud building, against a front that knows exactly where the new man is lined up. The board treated the news as a footnote and left the price where it was. Openers are where that kind of thing gets found out.

The three is doing real work too. It is the most common margin in the sport, and taking it with the home side means Dallas has to win by four or more rather than simply win. The moneyline at around plus one thirty eight is the same read at a longer price and counts as one position, not two. One unit on the side.

In-Game Bets

  • If Malik Nabers is inactive. Pass on the game entirely rather than adjusting. The projection assumes the Giants have their best receiver, and without him the nine point gap is not a gap I would defend.
  • If Dallas scores touchdowns on its first two possessions. Get off both. The replacement guard is holding up and the reason for the override has not shown up.
  • If the Giants trail by exactly three inside the last four minutes. Hold the points and leave the moneyline alone. The spread is already doing its job and adding to it at that stage is paying full price for a coin flip.

Bottom Line

Take the Giants and the three at -110 at Fanatics. The better team on our card is at home, getting a key number, against an opponent that lost an interior starter this week. One unit.
