Texas Tech won every one of its twelve wins by at least twenty points last season, then sent nine players to the NFL draft. The books want -220 that the Red Raiders go 11-1 again, and the quarterback they are counting on has started twice. I am taking the +180.

9
Texas Tech players drafted in 2026, a school record, including the starting quarterback

Key Storylines

  • A record nine Red Raiders were drafted. That is the most in school history out of a single season, and it includes quarterback Behren Morton, taken 234th by New England, along with David Bailey and Jacob Rodriguez. Texas Tech bought a roster, won a championship with it, and then watched a third of the good parts leave in one April.
  • The new quarterback is cleared, named, and barely tested. Will Hammond takes over, the same player who stepped in when Morton was injured against Utah last season, and he tore an ACL in that campaign. He is now past it: his surgeon cleared him roughly three weeks ago, Texas Tech has named him the starter, and Joey McGuire has said flatly that Hammond will be ready to go in week one. That is worse news for this ticket than it sounds, and it is the reason the rating came down. A month ago the knee was the reason to doubt this offense. It is not the reason any more. What is left is a quarterback with two career starts running an offense that lost nine players to the draft, which is a smaller edge than a quarterback who might not play at all.
  • The continuity is real and it is the strongest argument against this ticket. All three coordinators are back and signed through 2028, including Shiel Wood, a Broyles Award finalist after a first season in which Texas Tech won the Big 12 and reached the playoff. Eleven starters return and Texas Tech sits inside the top twenty nationally in returning production, with 67 percent back on offense and 55 percent on defense. This is not a program that emptied out.
  • The defense was the real story last season and it is still here. Wood’s unit recorded 39 sacks, two short of the national lead, and SP+ projects it eleventh against an offense it rates tenth. That is the shape that wins a lot of games by a lot of points, which is exactly what happened. It is also why an eleven-win season is genuinely plausible and why this is a three rather than higher.
  • The portal restocked the front seven. Edge Trey White arrives from San Diego State as a two-time first-team All-Mountain West pick with 19.5 career sacks, defensive lineman Bryce Butler comes from Washington, and cornerback Davin Martin, linebacker Austin Romaine and receiver Donte Lee Jr. came through the same window. Cornerback Brice Pollock and tight end Terrance Carter Jr. both announced returns. Nine players left for the draft and Joey McGuire went and bought replacements, which is the part the departure count never tells you.
  • The line in front of Hammond is mostly familiar. Tackle Howard Sampson is back after announcing his return, with Jacob Ponton at the other tackle, Hunter Zambrano inside and Sheridan Wilson at center. A quarterback with two career starts behind a settled line is a very different proposition from one behind a rebuild, and it is another reason the Over is live.
  • The schedule is the softest any contender has. Abilene Christian and Sam Houston State are the non-conference filler, Oregon State is the third, and Texas Tech does not play BYU, the only other Big 12 team the ratings put anywhere near it. If you were designing a path to eleven wins you would draw this one.

Win Total Analysis

The number is 10.5, with the Under at +180 and the Over at -220. That is the most lopsided win total I have looked at this month.

Start with what the Over actually requires. Twelve regular-season games, eleven wins. Lose one and you are fine. Lose two and it is over. The Big 12 championship game on December 4 does not count toward this number, and neither would a playoff run.

Now price it. At -220 you are laying better than two-to-one, which means being right close to seven times in ten. For that you need a team that is not merely good but nearly slip-proof across a full season.

Texas Tech was that team last year and it is fair to say so. Every single win came by twenty or more. But that roster sent nine players to the NFL, the quarterback among them, and the replacement has two career starts.

Be clear about which way the model leans, because it is not my way. SP+, the ESPN power rating this series leans on, has Texas Tech eighth nationally at 21.8 and projects 10.6 wins. Adjusted for the rating’s market bias that is about 10.75 against a line of 10.5, which sits fractionally on the Over. So the projection is against me and I am taking the Under anyway, entirely on price: +180 needs to be right about thirty-six percent of the time, and losing two games out of twelve happens far more often than that.

A team can be an eighteen-point favorite eleven weeks running and still drop one in Stillwater or Waco on a Saturday when the ball bounces wrong. That is not pessimism, it is what twelve-game seasons do. None of this argues the Red Raiders are anything less than the Big 12 favorite. It argues that -220 is too much to pay for perfection minus one.

Take the Under at +180.

Big 12 Picture

Texas Tech is the defending conference champion and the favorite to repeat. The Red Raiders won the program’s first Big 12 title last December, beating BYU 34-7 in Arlington, then reached the playoff for the first time in school history and lost the Orange Bowl 23-0 to Oregon.

That Orange Bowl is worth remembering when you look at this price. Against the second-rated team in the country, a team that had beaten everyone by three scores did not score at all.

I am not quoting you a playoff or conference price on Texas Tech, because I have not confirmed one at a book I can point you to. When I have, it will appear here with the book named.

Best Futures Bets

  • Under 10.5 wins (+180): The play, and the price is now the whole reason. Nine draft picks out, a first-time starter, and a requirement to lose no more than one game in twelve. This was a four when the quarterback might not have been available. He is available, so it is a three at half a stake, and the position rests entirely on -220 being too much to lay for near-perfection.
  • Over 10.5 wins (-220): The market’s side, the model’s side, and it is not foolish. All three coordinators are back, eleven starters return, the defense had 39 sacks, the non-conference schedule is three games of filler and BYU is not on the card. Hammond is healthy and named, so this ticket starts the season in better shape than it looked a month ago. I simply will not lay -220 to find out.
  • Big 12 winner: Watch list, no price quoted. Texas Tech would be the sensible favorite and I would rather hold that opinion in a market I can confirm.

Schedule Landmines

Weeks 1-4Abilene Christian, @ Oregon State, Houston, Sam Houston State
Weeks 5-8@ Colorado, Arizona State, @ Cincinnati
Weeks 9-11Arizona, West Virginia, @ Oklahoma State
Weeks 12-13@ Baylor, TCU

Weeks 1-4: Abilene Christian, a trip to Oregon State, Houston in Lubbock and Sam Houston State. Two of these are FCS-level opposition and a third is a rebuilding Oregon State. For a quarterback with two career starts, this is about as gentle a runway as college football provides, and the Over needs every one of them.

Weeks 5-8: Boulder on October 3, then the bye, then Arizona State at home on October 17 and a trip to Cincinnati. Arizona State is the most dangerous home game of the season and Cincinnati away in late October is a classic trap.

Weeks 9-11: Arizona and West Virginia in Lubbock, then Stillwater on November 14. Three games Texas Tech should win, and precisely the sort of stretch where an eleven-win season quietly becomes a ten-win one.

Weeks 12-13: Waco on November 21, then TCU at home to close. Both are rivalry games against teams that will not care about the ratings, and by then everyone will know exactly what this ticket needs.

Bottom Line

The defending Big 12 champion lost nine players to the draft including its quarterback, and hands the job to a starter with two career games under his belt. He is cleared and he is QB1, which makes this ticket harder than it looked in early August and is why it is a three at half a stake rather than a four at one. The coordinators all stayed, the defense had 39 sacks, the schedule is soft and the projection actually leans the other way. None of that justifies laying -220 on losing no more than one game in twelve. Take the Under at +180.

Why it connects
Texas Tech’s Under is this article’s own position, and BYU’s is the same bet across a conference the two do not share a game in this season. Miami is the third leg from the ACC, another name priced above our projection, and it plays neither Big 12 team. Every leg pays plus money, every price sits at BetMGM, and the combined number runs long because of it.
