Duke lost its quarterback to Miami. Tulane lost its head coach to Florida and its quarterback on top of that. Only one of those departures is in this price, and it is the wrong one.
The Matchup
- Both teams replaced a quarterback. Only one replaced its coach as well. Darian Mensah threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns and left for Miami, and Cooper Barkate went with him. That is real. What the number ignores is that Jon Sumrall left Tulane for Florida in December, Will Hall took over, and Jake Retzlaff is gone too. One side of this game is being charged for its losses and the other is not.
- SP+ never moved toward Tulane, and the eleven-win season is exactly why. The Green Wave went 11-3, won the American and reached the playoff, and still grade 87th. The system weights returning production far above last year’s record, and Tulane returns very little of what produced it. Duke sits 45th. That is a gap of roughly ten points before anyone walks into Wallace Wade.
- Duke’s offense did not fall apart when Mensah left. SP+ still rates it 20th. Nate Sheppard ran for 1,132 yards at 5.7 a carry as a freshman and is now the centrepiece of a power running team, with sixth-year San Jose State transfer Walker Eget handing it to him. A run-first identity is a lower-variance way to be good, and it holds up against a defense rated 82nd.
- Neither defense can get off the field. Duke grades 81st on that side and Tulane 82nd. Two bottom-third defenses is the fact this total is missing, and it is the reason the same argument moves both of our plays in the same direction.

The Number
Seven and a half is short by every measure we have. SP+ makes it Duke by better than twelve once home field is added. College Football News projects Duke 34, Tulane 24, which is Duke by ten. Two independent methods land past the number and nothing we can find lands short of it.
The reason the price is where it is comes down to two headlines cancelling each other out. Tulane won eleven games and made the playoff. Duke won the ACC and then lost its stars. Set those side by side and the instinct is to call it even. The rosters are not even, and the ratings have been saying so since the spring.
The total is fifty-one and a half and I want the Over. This number is written as though two new quarterbacks guarantees a quiet afternoon, and that gets the causation backwards. New quarterbacks produce turnovers and short fields at least as often as they produce punts, and the defenses waiting to punish those mistakes rank 81st and 82nd. The projection here is closer to fifty-eight.
The moneyline is a pass and I would rather say so than pad the page. Duke at around minus three hundred asks you to be right about three-quarters of the time, and the spread expresses the identical opinion at close to even money. Two plays on this game, not three.
In-Game Bets
- If Tulane’s opening drive ends in a punt and Duke answers with points. Add to Duke. A game that was mispriced before kickoff does not get repriced correctly by one possession, and the live number will still be behind where the ratings already are.
- If the first quarter passes ten combined points. Leave the Over alone rather than paying the new price. The argument is already working and the live total will have moved further than one quarter justifies.
- If Walker Eget throws an early interception. Stand down on the spread and keep the Over. Duke’s margin depends on an offense that cannot afford to hand over short fields, but short fields are how totals get there.
Bottom Line
Take Duke minus seven and a half at . Both of these teams lost a quarterback and only Tulane also lost its head coach, and the price is charging Duke for a rebuild while giving Tulane a discount for a season its current roster did not play.
