Take Kentucky and the ten and a half, and understand this is a lean rather than a stand. Alabama is clearly better. Ten and a half is about a point and a half more than better is worth here.
The Matchup
- Alabama’s receiver room is not whole. Jireh Edwards, AK Dear and Noah Rogers all warmed up before the opener and none of them played. Kalen DeBoer says Edwards and Dear are closest to returning and that Rogers is further off. Three names, none of them certain, going into a first conference road trip.
- The opener told us almost nothing. Alabama beat East Carolina 48 to 10, which is what a team of that talent is supposed to do. It moved the ratings up slightly. So did Kentucky’s week, by about the same amount, which is why the gap between them barely moved at all.
- This is Alabama’s first SEC game and the first road crowd that matters. Kroger Field in September with a ranked visitor is a real environment. Kentucky does not need to be good to make it awkward, and double digits asks Alabama to be comfortable early in a place built to prevent that.
- Ten and a half is the sticking point. Our projection makes Alabama a nine point winner here. The board wants ten and a half. That gap is small, it is real, and it sits on the home side.
The Number
SP+ has Alabama about eleven and a half points clear of Kentucky on neutral ground. Hand Kentucky the two and a half that a home stadium is worth and the projection comes to Alabama by nine. The board is at ten and a half. A point and a half of value, on the dog, at a key double-digit number.
That is better than it looked earlier in the week, when the preseason ratings put the gap at barely half a point and this was close to a pure coin flip. Both teams gained after Week 1 and Kentucky gained a shade more, which widened the edge rather than closing it. It is still not a big number and I am not going to inflate it.
What tips a close number toward the home side is the receiver situation. Three pass catchers who did not play last week, two described as close and one further away, is not a crisis, but it is the kind of thing that turns a comfortable three score afternoon into a two score one. Confidence four, one unit. The moneyline at around plus three twenty five is the same opinion priced for an outright upset rather than a cover, and it counts once. If you take one thing off this week’s card, take Ohio State, not this.
In-Game Bets
- If Edwards and Dear are both active and playing normal snaps. The support under a thin edge is gone. Pass on the game.
- If Alabama scores on its first three possessions. Get out of both. A short-handed receiver group was the argument and it is not showing up.
- If Kentucky is within one score in the fourth. The points have done their job. Leave the moneyline alone, because a live dog price at that stage is worse than the ticket you already hold.
Bottom Line
Take Kentucky and the ten and a half at . A nine point projection against a ten and a half point ask, a home crowd for a first conference road game, and three Alabama receivers whose status is still being described rather than confirmed. One unit.
