Two quarterbacks making their first college start, on a Thursday, in the first week of September. I do not need a projection to tell me where that goes. Give me the Under.
The Matchup
- Georgia Tech hands it to Alberto Mendoza, and it is his first one. He is the younger brother of Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman winner who went first overall, so he walks out at Bobby Dodd carrying a name the building already knows. First start, prime time, against a defense he has only seen on tape. That is not the script for a comfortable 34-point evening.
- Colorado counters with a sophomore in a brand new system. Julian Lewis takes over the offense under first-year coordinator Brennan Marion. Second year in the program, first year in this scheme, first real road test. New coordinators install faster than quarterbacks absorb, and openers are where that gap shows up as three-and-outs.
- The spread value already left. Our board recorded Colorado plus the points opening at +105. It now prices between -105 and -108 across four books. That is roughly a dime of movement onto the dog before kickoff. The market has taken the points. You are no longer getting paid to be early on that side.
- The number moved toward us before kickoff. The total sat at 50.5 on our board this morning and now reads 51.5, with all four of our books posting it. That extra point is the whole gift. Nobody moves a total a full point on a Thursday opener unless money is arriving on the Over, and buying the Under a point higher is a better position than the one this article was written from.

The Number
The total is 51.5, and both sides now price the same: -108 either way at the best book. There is no discount left to buy, and there does not need to be. The number itself moved a full point in the Under’s favor from the 50.5 we recorded this morning, which is worth more than any ten cents of juice.
Fifty-one and a half asks for something like 27-25. To get there, at least one of these two first-time starters has to be comfortable inside the first quarter, and probably both. Openers do not work that way. Drives stall on second-and-eight because a checkdown got thrown late. Field goal units come out on the road in a stadium that is loud for the first time. Two debuts is the single most reliable reason a September total lands short.
Here is the case against, and it is real. Fifty-one and a half is not a low number, so you are buying a lean rather than a bargain. Georgia Tech at home is the better team and can turn this into a three-touchdown evening if Mendoza is fine early, and a blowout drags a total up. Week 1 is also the least reliable week on the calendar, because nothing has been tested against anybody yet. That is why this is one standard play and not more. If you want a side, Georgia Tech is -235 at BetMGM and Colorado +220 at Fanatics. I am not on either. The number, not the winner, is the bet.
In-Game Bets
- If the first quarter ends 7-0 or lower. The live total will have dropped four or five points and the Over crowd will reach for it, because a slow quarter reads as a blip. It usually is not, when both quarterbacks are debuting. That drop is your second entry on the Under, at a number this morning would not give you.
- If Georgia Tech scores on its opening drive. Take Colorado live. An opening-possession touchdown moves a live spread toward the favorite immediately, and you will get the Buffaloes back at eight or nine points instead of six and a half. The pregame case for the dog was that the price got short, and a live move hands that value straight back.
- If either quarterback is pulled. Get out. This whole play is priced on two inexperienced starters staying on the field and playing carefully. A backup entering changes the shape of the game in either direction, and neither direction is one you handicapped this morning. Take what the live market gives you and leave it alone.
Bottom Line
Take the Under at 51.5, -108 at FanDuel. Two first college starts in a Thursday opener is the oldest low-scoring setup there is, the number has moved a full point in your favor since this morning, and the spread money has come and gone. One play, one unit, and no interest in picking the winner.
