Pittsburgh won the AFC North and the board came back with 8.5, which looks like disrespect until you count how the ten wins were built. A plus-twelve turnover margin, fourth-best in football, is the one edge that does not renew. Take away the takeaways and this is an eight-win roster changing coaches with a 42-year-old quarterback. The 8.5 is not disrespect. It is still too generous.
Key Storylines
- The division title was real and the underlying season was not. Pittsburgh finished 10-7 and won the AFC North, then lost at home in the Wild Card round to Houston. They scored about 398 points and allowed 387, a plus-eleven differential. That is a .500 team’s scoreboard attached to a 10-7 record, and the difference between the two is almost entirely the turnover column.
- The turnover margin is the whole bet. Pittsburgh finished plus twelve, fourth in the NFL, per FOX Sports. Turnover margin is the most reliably mean-reverting number in the sport. It regresses toward zero for nearly everyone, and the teams at the extremes fall the furthest. This one cuts twice: it inflated the win-loss record above the points, and it inflated the points themselves through short fields and drives that ended early.
- Mike Tomlin left and took nineteen years of institutional memory with him. Tomlin stepped down on January 13, 2026, the day after the Wild Card loss, closing a tenure that began in 2007. Pittsburgh hired Mike McCarthy, his third head job after Green Bay from 2006 to 2018 and Dallas from 2020 to 2024. He sat out the 2025 season. Our Browns preview called this transition underrated as a negative, and nothing in the research since has changed that read.
- Aaron Rodgers came back, at 42, for one more year with his old coach. This is the best story in the division. McCarthy coached Rodgers in Green Bay for thirteen seasons, and Rodgers re-signed on a one-year deal worth up to $25 million, with $22 million committed regardless of what happens. He has told reporters he plans to retire after this season. In 2025 he started 16 games and threw for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and 7 interceptions at 65.7 percent. Competent, and a long way from a passing attack that carries a twelve-win roster.
- The protection is the part that worries us most. Pittsburgh’s line allowed 31 sacks last season. Their own defense recorded 48, and those are two different numbers that get confused constantly. A 42-year-old quarterback who has already torn an Achilles is the clearest availability risk on this roster, even behind a line that allowed only 31 sacks. The offense also ranked 22nd in passing at 202.4 yards a game and 26th in rushing at 103.3, and Pittsburgh let Kenneth Gainwell walk.
Win Total Analysis
The number is 8.5, with the Over at +115 and the Under at -140 as of August 4.
Start with the number that argues against us, because it exists. Pittsburgh’s points produce a Pythagorean expectation of about 8.8 wins. Against a line of 8.5, that is +0.3 in favor of the Over. On the raw backward math, this is a small Over.
Here is why we are on the other side anyway. That 8.8 is not clean. A plus-twelve turnover margin does not only win games the points did not earn, it manufactures points: takeaways hand the offense short fields, and giveaways forced on opponents end drives before they score. Some meaningful share of the 398 scored and the 387 allowed exists because Pittsburgh won the turnover battle by twelve. Regress that toward zero, as it regresses for almost everyone, and the honest baseline slides toward eight wins rather than 8.8.
Then subtract the things that changed. A first-year head coach in a building that ran one way for nineteen years. A 42-year-old quarterback in a declared final season. A running game that finished 26th. None of that is a collapse. All of it is the difference between nine wins and eight.
The price is the weak part of this ticket and we will say so plainly. You are laying -140, which needs roughly 58 percent to break even. We think the honest number is a little better than that, and not by much.
The McCarthy and Rodgers reunion is a real thing, not a nostalgia headline. Rodgers spent thirteen years in this man’s offense and produced the best football of his career in it. If the timing comes back quickly and the passing game jumps from 22nd to league average, Pittsburgh wins nine or ten and the turnover regression never matters. The schedule is also neutral rather than punishing, 17th in the league by Sharp Football Analysis, so there is no calendar working against them.
The other risk is simpler. Sometimes good turnover teams stay good. Pittsburgh has generated takeaways under multiple coordinators for years, and treating all twelve of those as luck would be lazy. We are treating most of it as luck, not all of it.
This is a position to take now and revisit at the bye rather than defend blindly. The tell to watch is not the record, it is the turnover column: if Pittsburgh is still plus six or better at midseason, the thesis is failing on its own terms and the position should come off. If the margin has flattened toward zero and they are 4-5, the Under is close to home.
Division Odds
Pittsburgh is +550 to win the AFC North, behind Baltimore at -115 and Cincinnati at +185, with Cleveland at +2000. We have no position on the Steelers here. Our Bengals preview owns this market and takes Cincinnati at +185, on the argument that the Bengals are the only team in the division that kept its head coach while the other three install new ones. Pittsburgh is one of those three, and the defending champion breaking in a new voice at 8.5 wins is exactly what that argument predicts.
Best Futures Bets
- Under 8.5 wins (-140): The lead play. Turnover regression, a coaching transition and a 42-year-old quarterback behind a leaky line, at a price that is workable rather than good.
- Aaron Rodgers passing props (when posted): The market may price his volume off the McCarthy reunion narrative. He threw for 3,322 yards last season on a run-first team that is still run-first. If season-long yardage opens above that, the Under is the side. Rodgers passing props (when posted)BookOddsPrice not yet posted at FanDuel or DraftKings
Schedule Landmines
- Atlanta at home in Week 1: Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers open together at Acrisure Stadium, years after the partnership that started in Green Bay. Season openers under new head coaches are where timing problems surface, and this one comes against a Falcons team Pittsburgh is expected to beat. For an Under, a comfortable Week 1 win is the least useful result on the board: it is the game that convinces the market the transition is seamless, right before the schedule turns.
- Baltimore in Week 15 and Week 18: Both meetings with the division favorite land in the final four weeks, and the finale is in Baltimore. Our Ravens preview takes their Under at 11.5, so we are not treating these as automatic losses. We are pointing out that Pittsburgh’s two hardest division games arrive at exactly the point in the season where a 42-year-old quarterback is least likely to be at his best.
- Cincinnati in Week 3 and Week 10: The Bengals are the one AFC North team that kept its head coach, and they are the side we back to win the division at +185. Pittsburgh hosts them in Week 3 and travels in Week 10. Split these and the Under stays comfortable. Sweep them and the plus-twelve turnover regression has to carry this bet on its own, which is more weight than one statistic should hold.
- Cleveland twice, then Denver in Week 12: The Browns come in Week 4 and Week 8, and our own preview argues they stay live into the fourth quarter far more often than a 5-12 record suggests. Then Week 12 brings Denver to Acrisure, a 14-3 team we back to clear 9.5 again. That three-game sequence is what separates an eight-win season from a nine-win one, and the Under only needs one of them to go wrong.
Bottom Line
Pittsburgh won ten games on a .500 point differential and the fourth-best turnover margin in football. Take away the takeaways and it is an eight-win roster changing coaches, with a 42-year-old quarterback in a declared final season. Take the Under.
