I’m taking Iowa and the fourteen and a half at Kinnick. Ohio State is the better team and should win, but the numbers make it closer to eleven and a half, and the best defense in the country doesn’t need to win to cover this. That’s a light play.
The Matchup
- Iowa hasn’t let anyone breathe. The Hawkeyes are 4-0 and No. 14, allowing eight points a game, the fewest in the country. They shut out Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa, beat Iowa State 16-13, and won 20-19 at Michigan on a touchdown on the last play.
- Ohio State’s offense is the real thing. The Buckeyes are 3-1 and No. 5, scoring 45 a game. Julian Sayin has 1,206 yards, ten touchdowns and one interception, and Jeremiah Smith has 617 receiving yards and seven scores, four of them last week against Illinois. The one loss was 24-23 at Texas.
- Ohio State’s run defense showed a crack. Illinois ran for 199 yards at six a carry against the Buckeyes last week. Iowa’s Kamari Moulton is averaging more than seven a carry. Ohio State is also playing without right tackle Phillip Daniels, and freshman nickel Jay Timmons is day-to-day with a leg injury.
- Kinnick has done this before. The last time Ohio State came here, in 2017, an unranked Iowa beat the No. 3 Buckeyes 55-24. Kickoff is 3:30 PM ET on CBS. Iowa’s depth chart shows no injured starters.
The Number
The current ratings, updated after Week 4, have Ohio State 14 points better than Iowa on a neutral field. Give Iowa two and a half for playing at home and that’s Ohio State by 11.5. The board has Ohio State by fourteen and a half. That’s three points on the Hawkeyes, a real disagreement and under our four-point warning line.
The line has barely moved. It opened at fourteen or fourteen and a half, depending on the shop, and it’s fourteen and a half now. Most of the tickets are on Ohio State, but most of the money is on Iowa. That split is usually the bigger bettors taking the points.
Why only a light play? Because the line hasn’t come our way, and because Iowa’s offense is the question. Hank Brown hasn’t thrown an interception, but he’s thrown for 700 yards in four games, and Iowa will need to score at least a couple of times. The defense keeps this close. The offense decides whether it covers. Iowa plus fourteen and a half, light play, confidence two.
In-Game Bets
- If Iowa is within a touchdown at halftime. Do nothing. You have the points, and this defense protects second-half leads and deficits the same way: slowly.
- If Ohio State leads by 21 in the second quarter. Leave it. That’s Jeremiah Smith doing what he did to Illinois, and there’s no live number worth chasing.
- If Iowa runs for 100 yards in the first half. Look at Iowa on the live number. That’s the Illinois blueprint working again, and it shortens the game.
Bottom Line
Take Iowa plus fourteen and a half at . Light play. The numbers make Ohio State an eleven-and-a-half-point favorite at Kinnick, the board asks fourteen and a half, and Iowa has the best scoring defense in the country. The Buckeyes’ passing game is the risk, and the line hasn’t moved our way, so it’s a light play at confidence two.
Same-Game Parlay
One read in two legs, both posted at the book on the card. If Iowa covers fourteen and a half, it’s most likely because the best scoring defense in the country keeps this game low. Iowa’s games have stayed under this number in two of its last three, and Iowa allows eight points a game. Both legs need the same afternoon, so this is one position, not two bets. Size it small.
The angleIowa covers by keeping Ohio State’s offense in check and the game under 45.5.
