Vanderbilt won ten games, lost nearly everybody who did it, and the books cut them four and a half wins. That is one cut too many. I am on the Over.

The departures are not in dispute. Diego Pavia is gone. So are three of the top four receivers, four starting offensive linemen, and eight of the eleven regulars in the defensive front six. Vanderbilt returns 38 percent of its offensive production, which ranks 115th in the country. Among power-conference teams, per ESPN, only Iowa State returns less.

None of that is a secret, and that is exactly my point. SP+, the ESPN power rating this pick leans on, reads the same roster sheet the books do. It subtracts the same players and still lands at 6.3 wins. The bad news is already in the number. A line of 5.5 charges for it a second time.

Vanderbilt's SP+ projected wins, against a line of 5.5

Key Storylines

  • The market is charging twice for one problem. That is the whole bet. A ten-win team lost its quarterback and most of its production, and the number fell from what a ten-win team gets to what a bottom-third SEC team gets. SP+ made the same subtraction and landed a full win higher. When a projection that already knows the roster still beats the line by a win, that gap is the edge.
  • Jared Curtis is not a walk-on. Vanderbilt is replacing the Heisman runner-up with the No. 12 prospect in the 2026 class. Five-star quarterbacks do not sign with Vanderbilt, and this one did, which tells you as much about where the program stands now as any ranking does. Freshman quarterbacks are volatile and I will not pretend otherwise. But losing a great player is not the same as having nothing behind him, and the price treats those as the same situation.
  • The line was rebuilt through the portal, and the coordinators stayed put. Four starters left up front and one came back, so Clark Lea went shopping: center Lyndon Cooper from Pittsburgh with 25 starts there, guard Micah DeBose from Alabama and tackle Beau Johnson from North Dakota State, with Cade McConnell sliding out to tackle. Tim Beck calls the offense for a third year and Steve Gregory runs the defense for a third, which matters more than usual when the quarterback is eighteen. Seventeen transfers in, seventeen out.
  • The defense is the soft spot, and it is not close. SP+ projects Vanderbilt’s offense 15th in the country and its defense 56th, with eight of the eleven regulars gone from the front six. Gregory reloaded from Stillwater: defensive tackle Michael Diatta, edge Edwin Kolenge and defensive back Jaylin Davies all came from Oklahoma State. Kicker Brock Taylor and punter Nick Haberer handle the specialists. A 15th-ranked offense with a 56th-ranked defense wins shootouts and loses 38-31 in October, and both of those count the same toward 5.5.
  • What Pavia actually was. He finished second in the Heisman voting and threw for 347 yards in the bowl game. The 10-3 was not turnover luck or a soft slate. It was a quarterback playing at an award level for three straight months. Losing that costs real wins. It costs about a win and a half in the rating, not four and a half.
  • Clark Lea built something that survives a reset. ESPN’s read is that the program feels sturdier than it did two years ago, and that a top-30 finish would be a genuine endorsement of what Lea has done. Anchor Down stopped being a punchline on his watch. Lea rebuilt this thing from the bottom of the SEC, and the win total is priced closer to what Vanderbilt was than to what it has become.
  • The season ended against a team we have written up. Vanderbilt lost the ReliaQuest Bowl 34-27 to Iowa, a one-score game against a program built to win exactly that kind of game. Worth remembering when you see the 5.5: the last time the Commodores took the field, they went to the wire with a nine-win Big Ten team.

Win Total Analysis

The number is 5.5, with the Over at -140 and the Under at +114. Vanderbilt went 10-3 last season. The line is asking a ten-win team to win five. Say that out loud once.

Bill Connelly’s SP+ projects Vanderbilt at 6.3 wins, 29th nationally, against the 24th-toughest schedule. I adjust that figure before I use it: across the 28 college teams where I hold both a projection and a posted line, SP+ runs about 0.15 wins below the market, so every projection gets that added back before I pick a side. Vanderbilt’s adjusted number is about 6.4 against a line of 5.5, a gap of nearly a full win toward the Over. That is tied with Missouri for the widest gap in our college set, and wider than Ohio State’s.

Count the path instead of trusting the gap. Austin Peay and Delaware are two wins nobody argues about. NC State at home is a live third. Then come the three lowest-rated teams in the entire conference, and Vanderbilt draws all of them: Arkansas at 4.4 wins at FirstBank Stadium, Kentucky at 4.5 on the road, and Mississippi State at 4.7 on the road. Vanderbilt beat Kentucky 45-17 last season. Win the two gimmes, the home nonconference game and those three, and the Over has cashed without beating Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, Florida or Tennessee.

The Over needs six wins from twelve; the Under needs Vanderbilt to lose seven. Framed that way, the Under is asking a team that just won ten to lose seven of twelve, with a five-star at quarterback and the same head coach on the sideline. That happens. It happens to programs with less under them than this one has now.

The honest case against: freshman quarterbacks lose games they should win, and this offensive line is nearly all new. If Curtis is not ready by October, the trips to Georgia and Florida become the kind of losses that drag a season under. That risk is why this is a five and not higher, and it is a real risk, not a decorative one.

SEC Picture

Vanderbilt is not winning the SEC, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. The interesting question is the floor, in a conference with no divisions left to hide in. Every team plays a real slate now, and Vanderbilt’s draw is the 24th-toughest in the country instead of the tenth, with all three of the league’s weakest teams on it.

That is the structure of it. A middling SEC team with a friendly draw and a five-star quarterback is a six or seven win team. The books priced Vanderbilt like a five-win program, which is what you hang on a team with no quarterback and no coach worth keeping. The Commodores have both. The same team the whole country fell for last fall is priced like a doormat again, and that doubt is the only reason this number is low enough to bet.

Best Futures Bets

  • Over 5.5 wins (-140): The lead play. An adjusted 6.4 against a line of 5.5, with all three of the weakest teams in the conference on the schedule.
  • Jared Curtis passing props: Not a preseason ticket, a standing order. Freshman quarterback numbers get set off recruiting rank instead of usage, and Vanderbilt will lean on him harder than the market expects given how little else returns. Wait for the weekly boards.
  • Vandy as a road underdog: The same idea, week to week. If the books are a win low on the season, they are points low on individual Saturdays, and the road number is where it shows first.

  • NC State at home, September 19. The third game and the first real one. A home nonconference date with an ACC opponent is the kind of fixture a rebuilding team drops and a functional one wins. If West End is going to see this number cleared comfortably, the first sign shows up here.
  • Arkansas at home, October 17. The quietest big game of the season. Arkansas carries the lowest SP+ projection in the SEC at 4.4 wins, and Vanderbilt gets them at FirstBank Stadium. On a 5.5, a home date with the worst team in the league is close to a must-win, and it is the one every preview will skip past.
  • At Kentucky, October 24. The most important game on the card for this bet, and almost nobody will preview it that way. Kentucky is the second-lowest rating in the SEC at 4.5 wins, ahead of only Arkansas, and Vanderbilt hung 45-17 on them last November. This is the road game the Over is counting on, which also makes it the one that hurts most if it goes sideways.
  • At Mississippi State, November 7. Right out of the bye, against the league’s third-weakest team at 4.7. Drawing all three of the SEC’s worst is a scheduling gift for a team priced at 5.5, and it is the clearest reason the number looks low to me.
  • Tennessee at home, November 28. The finale, and Vanderbilt beat them last season. Our Tennessee preview takes the Over on its own win total, and both can happen: the Vols can clear eight and still lose in Nashville in late November. Vanderbilt won the 2025 meeting in Knoxville, the harder version of the same result. If this ticket comes down to the last Saturday, a home crowd on West End is the version you want.

Bottom Line

Vanderbilt lost a Heisman finalist and most of a roster, and everybody knows it, including the projection. Adjusted for its own bias, the number says about 6.4 against a line of 5.5, and the schedule hands the Commodores all three of the weakest teams in the SEC. The market subtracted the same players twice. Anchor Down. Over 5.5 at -140.

Why it connects
Nashville’s rise is the lead leg. South Carolina Over is the same read one state over: a team the ratings put clear of its price. LSU Under is the other side of the same conference, the established name priced on reputation. None of the three play each other in 2026, and all three prices sit at FanDuel on one slip.
