Bill Belichick’s second season opens in Dublin against the team that hung 48 on him last August. The books say eight and a half. I think that is a couple of points too many. Give me the Tar Heels.

The Matchup

  • Two quarterbacks making a first start is how a favorite fails to cover. TCU hands its offense to Jaden Craig, who arrives from Harvard with single-season program records of 2,869 yards and 25 touchdowns. North Carolina goes with Billy Edwards Jr., who beat out Miles O’Neill and freshman Travis Burgess. Laying eight and a half points with an offense that has never run a snap in anger is a different proposition from laying it with a settled one.
  • Edwards is upright for the first time in a year. He hurt his knee in Wisconsin’s opener last season, came back three weeks later, then missed the rest of the year. Offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino said this month he is “as healthy as he’s been in a long time.” A quarterback who has not finished a season is exactly the profile a market discounts, and that discount is what you are buying at plus the points.
  • Both defenses rate inside the SP+ top 40. TCU is 37th on that side, North Carolina 36th. That matters more for a dog than a favorite. The Tar Heels do not need to win this game for the ticket to cash, they need it to stay inside one score range, and two good defenses in a first outing is the friendliest script available for that.
  • The extra points are being charged for last August. TCU won this meeting 48-14 in Chapel Hill, and it is the only evidence anyone holds of these two playing each other. A 34-point afternoon a year ago is a memory rather than a forecast, and memories are what push a number past where it belongs.

The Number

SP+ rates TCU at 9.4 and North Carolina at 3.5. On a neutral field that is a 5.9-point game. The board is at 8.5. That 2.6 points of daylight is the entire bet, and it is the kind of gap that shows up when a market remembers a blowout more clearly than it reads a roster.

Price the side honestly. North Carolina plus the points is -105 at DraftKings and -108 at FanDuel, so the shopping is worth about half a point of juice. At -105 you need to be right a shade over 51 percent of the time. A 2.6-point edge on a spread this size clears that with room, but not by so much that it becomes a big play.

The case against is North Carolina’s 79th-ranked offense and a 34-point loss to this team last year, which is why this is one standard play and not more.

In-Game Bets

  • If TCU scores first and North Carolina answers inside two possessions. The live spread will still have the Horned Frogs laying a touchdown and change, because early scoring drags live numbers toward the favorite. That is the window to take the Tar Heels again at a better price than the one you got in the morning.
  • If the first quarter ends 3-0 or 0-0. Two debut quarterbacks and two top-40 defenses is the script this side wants, because a low-scoring game is a close one. A live number that has come down a point or two is still worth taking on North Carolina.
  • If Edwards leaves and the backup comes in. Get out. The entire play is priced on him being healthy, and North Carolina’s second option has not taken a meaningful snap. Take whatever the live market gives you on the Tar Heels side and walk away rather than hoping.

Bottom Line

Take North Carolina plus the points at -105. The projection says this is a six-point game, the books are charging eight and a half, and two first-time starters in a Week 0 opener is not the setting for a blowout. The Tar Heels do not have to win. They have to stay close.
