NC State brings back a quarterback with two years of starts. Virginia brings in one from Missouri and the best defense on the field. The line is four. I am laying it.

The Matchup

  • Virginia’s defense is the best thing in this game. SP+ rates it 24th. Nothing else on the field is close: NC State’s offense is 32nd, Virginia’s offense 62nd, NC State’s defense 59th. When one unit is clearly the best on the field and its team is only laying four at home, that is where to start.
  • Virginia has a quarterback who has done this before, just not here. Beau Pribula arrived from Missouri and beat out Pitt transfer Eli Holstein. He started all ten games he appeared in last season and completed nearly 68 percent. A 62nd-rated offense with a functional veteran under center does not have to be good to lay four, it has to avoid giving the game away.
  • The number has come to the Wolfpack, and it has come too far. CBS previewed this game with Virginia as a 5.5-point favorite; our partner books are at 4 this morning. Somebody has been backing NC State, and taking the short side after money has pushed a number is usually where whatever is left of the value sits.
  • This was supposed to be in Brazil. The game was scheduled for Sao Paulo and moved back to the United States about twelve weeks out, and it only counts in the standings because the ACC went to nine conference games. NC State opens with a conference road game for the first time in more than fifty years, which is not nothing for a team that has to travel and win.

The Number

SP+ rates Virginia at 8.1 and NC State at 5.7. That is 2.4 points of separation on a neutral field, and this game is not on a neutral field. Add a normal home edge and the projection lands a touch above the 4 the market is posting. The edge is under a point. I am telling you that plainly because a sub-point edge is a half play and nothing more.

The best price is -108 at BetMGM and DraftKings, with Fanatics at -110. On a number this thin the two cents are a real share of what you are playing for, so take the -108 rather than shrugging at it. Laying four with the better defense, the home stadium, and a line that has drifted a point and a half toward the other side is the whole shape of this bet.

The case against is CJ Bailey, a third-year starter with 3,105 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, facing a defense playing its first live snaps of the year.

In-Game Bets

  • If NC State scores on its first two possessions. The live spread will swing several points toward the Wolfpack on a sample of two drives against a defense that has not played yet. Virginia at plus or pick in the live market, with the better unit on the field, is the number to take.
  • If the game is tied or inside a field goal at halftime. Take Virginia on the live side. The Cavaliers are the home team with the better defense, and a coin-flip scoreboard at the break in a game they were favored in means you are getting the same bet at a shorter price.
  • If Pribula throws an early interception. That is the specific failure this pick cannot absorb. A 62nd-rated offense giving away possessions against a defense that generates points is how a four-point favorite loses by fourteen. Take the exit rather than the hope.

Bottom Line

Lay the four with Virginia at -108, half a play. The Cavaliers have the best unit on the field, the home stadium, and a line that has drifted a point and a half in the other direction. The edge is small and I am not going to pretend otherwise, but it is on the right side of the number.
