Take the points. San Jose State scored twenty-six in Los Angeles last Saturday and Eastern Michigan beat an FCS team by eleven at home, and the market has decided the Eagles are the better side.

26
Points San Jose State scored at 14th-ranked USC in Week 0

The Matchup

  • Week 0 told you more about the team that lost. San Jose State went into the Coliseum and put twenty-six on a top-fifteen opponent in a 42-26 defeat. Eastern Michigan opened with 28-17 over Sacramento State, an FCS program, in Ypsilanti. Those two results are being treated as roughly equal and they are not remotely equal.
  • Eastern Michigan is playing for something and it shows in the price. The Eagles are going for their first 2-0 start since 2018 before they travel to Michigan State. That is a real story and I understand why the home side is favored. It is not worth three points against a team that just traded scores with a ranked opponent for a half.
  • This is the shortest number on the Friday board. Two and a half points is the market saying these teams are inside a field goal of each other, which is a rare admission this early. When a line is that tight, the side with the tougher Week 0 opponent is usually the one being undervalued, because the box score punishes them for the schedule.
  • The total is genuinely thin here and you should treat it that way. Only two of our books post a number on this game at all. Fewer opinions means a softer price, which is an argument for taking a position, but it also means less confirmation that the number is right. That is why this is one unit and not two.

The Number

Two and a half at home is close to a coin flip with a small tax, and I want the side of that flip that has already proven it can move the ball against real people. San Jose State’s offense scored twenty-six against a defense that is going to spend the season in the top twenty-five. Eastern Michigan’s twenty-eight came against Sacramento State. One of those performances tells you something about tonight and the other mostly tells you the Eagles handled an opponent they were supposed to handle.

The total is the second position and it runs slightly against the grain. Fifty-five and a half is a high number for a game featuring a team that just needed four quarters to beat an FCS side by eleven. Eastern Michigan is not built to trade touchdowns; they won last week by controlling the game rather than by outscoring anyone. If the Eagles play the same way tonight and San Jose State is missing its best matchup advantages against a defense that is happy to slow the tempo, this lands in the high forties.

The risk on the Under is straightforward. San Jose State can score in bunches and showed it six days ago, and if Eastern Michigan has to keep pace we get to fifty-seven without much trouble. I am comfortable at one unit and I would not add to it.

In-Game Bets

  • If Eastern Michigan scores first and the live number goes to six or more. Take San Jose State again. An early home score in a three-point game moves the live spread further than the football justifies, and you will get a better number than anything available before kickoff.
  • If the first half stays under twenty-four combined. Add to the Under. A quiet opening thirty minutes in a game with only two books posting a total is exactly where the live price overreacts, and the second-half number will be soft.
  • If San Jose State turns it over twice in the first half. Stand down on the side. This play depends on the Spartans keeping possession and matching drives, and giving a home favorite short fields twice is a different game from the one priced this morning.

Bottom Line

Take San Jose State plus two and a half at . One of these teams played a ranked opponent to a competitive scoreline last week and the other beat an FCS side by eleven, and the market is asking me to believe those results were equally impressive.
