Twenty-one and a half is too many. USC beat San Jose State by sixteen last Saturday and gave up twenty-six doing it. Give me the points again.
The Matchup
- The number asks USC to do something it failed to do six days ago. Week 0 finished 42-26 over San Jose State, a sixteen-point win as a heavy favorite in their own stadium. The ask tonight is twenty-one and a half against a Mountain West team that will not be starstruck by the Coliseum. Nothing about last Saturday earned those extra points.
- The defense is why we are on the Trojans’ season Under. SP+ has this team sixth in the country on offense and twenty-eighth on defense, the widest split of any ranked Big Ten side, and Gary Patterson is installing his scheme from scratch after arriving from TCU. New defensive systems are not fixed in Week One. They are exposed in it.
- Fresno State starts a quarterback nobody has film on. Jayden Mandal was named the starter on Monday and has thrown nine passes in his college career, all of them back in 2024. That cuts against me on the total and toward me on the spread, and I would rather be honest about which way it points than pretend it only helps.
- Jayden Maiava is playing the best football of his life. Twenty-five of twenty-nine for 286 yards and two scores in the opener. I am not arguing USC loses. I am arguing that a team whose defense surrenders twenty-six to San Jose State does not routinely win by four scores.

The Number
Here is the shape of my problem with twenty-one and a half. For USC to cover, the Trojans essentially have to play a cleaner game against Fresno State than they played against a San Jose State team that just lost its opener and is a three-point underdog at Eastern Michigan tonight. The Coliseum crowd does not tackle. Patterson’s front seven has to, and it did not consistently do so last week.
The total is where the second play lives. Fifty-one and a half sits below what these teams actually produced in Week 0, and USC alone was involved in sixty-eight points. A sixth-ranked offense against a defense that will spend the night on the field, plus a Fresno State attack that only has to reach the mid-teens for this to clear, is a reasonable Over even with an untested passer. The number does not need a shootout. It needs USC to look like USC and Fresno State to score twice.
The honest counterweight is Mandal. Nine career attempts is nine, and if he is not ready the Bulldogs could stall out at ten points and take both of my plays down with him. That is the single outcome that beats this article, and it is why this is one standard unit rather than more.
In-Game Bets
- If USC leads by more than twenty-four at the half. Take Fresno State live and take the second-half number. Lincoln Riley empties the bench with a four-score lead, the backups play conservatively, and a live spread built on the first thirty minutes will hand you far more points than the pregame market ever offered.
- If Fresno State’s opening two drives both end in three-and-outs. That is your cue on the Over, not against it. The live total will drop several points off a quiet first quarter, and USC scoring in the twenties by itself gets most of the way to this number.
- If Mandal leaves the game. Get out of both. A backup with no first-team reps against a Power Four defense changes the shape of the night in a direction nobody handicapped, and there is no version of that where you are still holding the bet you meant to make.
Bottom Line
Take Fresno State plus twenty-one and a half at . USC covered nothing like this number against a lesser opponent last week, the defense is the acknowledged weak half of a top-fifteen team, and I do not need the Bulldogs to win to get paid.
