Atlanta opened as a home favorite and is now getting two and a half. Four points is the biggest move on the Week 2 board, our numbers still like the Falcons, and I am not betting the spread.
The Matchup
- Atlanta does not know who is playing quarterback. Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday. Michael Penix Jr. (knee) and Cooper Rush (back) were full participants and split first-team work. Head coach Kevin Stefanski on September 16: “I’d say we’re working through it. I’m not ruling anyone out.”
- Two more Atlanta starters sat with him. Guard Chris Lindstrom is in the concussion protocol and cornerback A.J. Terrell (shoulder) also did not practice, per the same report.
- Carolina gave up 59 points in its opener. The Panthers lost 59-37 at home to Chicago on September 13. A defense that allows 59 is not usually the reason a line moves four points in its favor.
- Atlanta lost 20-13 at Pittsburgh in the same window. Thirteen points on the road is a quiet afternoon, and it is the sort of result that leaves a market waiting for a reason to reprice. The quarterback report gave it one.
- Kickoff is 1:00 PM ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Indoors, so weather is not part of this.
The Number
Our season card has Atlanta at 7.2 projected wins and Carolina at 6.5. At one point per projected win with three for home field, that is Atlanta by 3.8. The board has Carolina by two and a half. Six and three tenths of disagreement is the second largest gap on the Sunday slate, and on any other week that would be the headline.
It is not an edge, it is a blind spot. Our projection was built on an Atlanta roster with a settled quarterback. The market has since learned that the starter has not practiced all week and that the club will not say who replaces him. Our number cannot see that. The market can, and the market moved four points on it.
Our own review of last week said this would happen. Sorting our college picks by the size of our disagreement with the board, the widest gaps were the worst results, which is the opposite of what a real edge does. A six point gap that appears overnight, on news, in a game the market repriced without us, is the clearest version of that pattern on this board.
So the rule applies to us and not just to the reader. We only stake a game when we can name what we know that the price does not, and here it is the reverse: the price knows something our projection does not. If you have to pick a side it is Atlanta and the points, because a two and a half point line for a home team is a lot of respect to hand a team that just allowed 59. The card reads confidence one, no stake, and that is the honest size of it.
In-Game Bets
- If Tagovailoa is active on Sunday morning. The reason we passed is gone, and the Falcons side is worth a look at whatever the number has become by then.
- If Cooper Rush starts. Stay away entirely. The market moved four points on exactly this and it is not waiting around for us to catch up.
- If Carolina scores on its first two possessions. Hold. Falling behind keeps the ball in Bijan Robinson’s hands, and that is the whole parlay.
In-Game Parlay
Whoever plays quarterback, this offense runs through Bijan Robinson. Atlanta already played Week 1 without Tagovailoa or Penix, and Robinson accounted for 173 of its 238 yards at Pittsburgh, 83 rushing and 90 receiving with a touchdown. Carolina just gave up 59 points to Chicago. The spread on its own is a pass; tied to Robinson, it is the bet. One position, a half play.
The angleThe quarterback is a question. Robinson is not, and a defense that allowed 59 is not the one to slow him down.
Build it at Fanatics →Fanatics prices same-game parlays in its own builder, so there is no price here. Build the legs there and check the number before you place it.
Bottom Line
No stake on the spread in Panthers at Falcons. The bet is the in-game parlay above. Our numbers make it Atlanta by nearly four and the board has Carolina by two and a half, which looks like the biggest disagreement of the weekend until you read Atlanta’s injury report. The lean is Atlanta plus the points at , and on its own it is a pass.
