I’ll take Detroit laying three and a half in Charlotte on Sunday night, and I’m going against my own season numbers to do it. Those numbers like Carolina. They don’t know the Panthers just put both starting corners on injured reserve, with both starting tackles already out. I like the Lions here, but it’s a lean.

The Matchup

  • Carolina’s secondary is gone. The Panthers put Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) on injured reserve Wednesday. That leaves three corners on the roster, including a rookie. Tackles Ikem Ekwonu and Taylor Moton are out indefinitely, and so are defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton and guard Damien Lewis.
  • Jared Goff hasn’t thrown a pick. The Lions quarterback has 802 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions. Amon-Ra St. Brown has five touchdown catches, and Jahmyr Gibbs has six total touchdowns. Detroit beat New Orleans 31-30 in overtime, lost 41-31 at Buffalo, and beat the Jets 31-24.
  • Carolina has been all over the place. The Panthers gave up 59 to Chicago in the opener, won 34-3 at Atlanta, then lost 21-18 at Cleveland. Bryce Young went 26-for-48 last week and was playing through a lower-body injury, but he’s expected to start.
  • Detroit’s defense is no bargain either. The Lions are allowing 326 passing yards a game, with Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph still on the PUP list. Kickoff is 8:20 PM ET on NBC, Carolina’s first Sunday night game in ten years.

The Number

Our preview had Detroit at 10.0 wins and Carolina at about 6.75 once you take out last year’s turnover luck. One point per projected win and three for home field makes it Detroit by a quarter of a point. The board has Detroit by three and a half, so the numbers are 3.25 points on Carolina. On its own, that’s a real disagreement.

But those numbers were built on a healthy Carolina roster, and this week it lost both starting corners, with both starting tackles already out. Our rules let us override the numbers for starters lost the same week in a game inside ten points, and this is exactly that. The market agrees: the line opened at Detroit minus two and a half and it’s three and a half now.

That’s also why it’s only a lean. The move has already priced most of it, Detroit is 0-2-1 against the spread this year, and the Lions’ own secondary is giving up yards to everybody. What tips it is simple: a quarterback who hasn’t thrown an interception, against three healthy corners. Detroit minus three and a half, lean, confidence one.

In-Game Bets

  • If Carolina leads at halftime. Look at Detroit on the live number. A thin secondary gets thinner in the second half, and Goff doesn’t need long.
  • If Young is limping in the first quarter. Do nothing. You already have the right side, and a lean doesn’t need a second ticket.
  • If Detroit leads by 14 at halftime. Leave it. The Lions have given up 24 or more in all three games, so nothing’s safe, but there’s nothing to add either.

Bottom Line

Take Detroit minus three and a half at . Lean. Our season numbers like Carolina, but they were built on a healthy roster, and the Panthers just lost both starting corners, with both starting tackles already out. That’s the kind of same-week injury our rules let us override for. The line has already moved a point, so it stays a lean.

Same-Game Parlay

One read in three legs, all posted at the book on the card. If Detroit covers, it’s most likely because Jahmyr Gibbs is running through the worst run defense in the league and Amon-Ra St. Brown is finding the end zone against a Carolina secondary that just lost both starting corners. Every leg needs the same night, so this is one position, not three bets, and it’s a lean like the side.
