I’ll take the Giants laying two and a half at home, even with Jameis Winston at quarterback. The numbers still have them about four points better than Tennessee. I like the Giants here, but losing Jaxson Dart makes this a lean, not a pound-the-table play.
The Matchup
- The Giants lost their quarterback for the season. Jaxson Dart got hurt on the opening drive of Monday’s 28-6 loss to the Rams and needs knee surgery. Jameis Winston starts. In relief on Monday he went 11 of 27 for 111 yards and an interception, but he’s also a veteran with 89 career starts, not a rookie thrown in cold.
- Dart was the heart of our preview. Our Giants preview leaned over 7.5 wins on a second-year jump from Dart. The Giants beat Dallas 28-20 in Week 1 with Dart throwing three touchdowns. Without him, the ceiling comes down, but the roster around him is the same.
- Tennessee is 0-2 and still looking for offense. The Titans lost 23-10 to the Jets and then 24-20 to the Eagles on a touchdown in the final minute. Cam Ward threw for 140 yards in the opener. Our preview liked the Robert Saleh and Brian Daboll setup around him, and Daboll coached the Giants until last year.
- The Giants are banged up beyond the quarterback. Edge Brian Burns (ankle), left tackle Andrew Thomas (groin) and Malik Nabers (shoulder) are all listed as questionable. Kickoff is 1:00 PM ET at MetLife.
The Number
Using the adjusted projections from our previews, the Giants come in around eight wins and the Titans around seven. One point per projected win and three for home field makes it Giants by four. The board says Giants by two and a half to three. That’s a point to a point and a half on the Giants, under our two-point line.
The line is the honest part of this. It opened at Giants by five and a half to six, and it dropped three points when Dart’s injury came out. Our number was built with Dart on the field, so the real edge is smaller than it looks, and it might not be there at all. That’s why this is confidence one.
Our Titans preview had a real case too. It expected Tennessee’s minus-six turnover margin from last year to even out, which is worth about a win, and it liked Ward’s growth under Saleh and Daboll. Two weeks in, the defense has kept both games close. The offense hasn’t held up its end.
Why the Giants anyway? Because a three-point drop already prices in a lot of the Dart news, and the Titans haven’t shown they can score. Tennessee has 30 points in two games. A veteran quarterback at home against that is still the better side, just not by much. Take the Giants, as a lean.
In-Game Bets
- If Winston throws an interception in the first half. Leave it. That’s the risk the market was pricing, and it’s a lean, not a position to defend.
- If the Giants lead by ten at halftime. Do nothing. Tennessee hasn’t come back from two scores yet this year.
- If Thomas and Burns are both inactive. Treat it as a warning and don’t add anything. That’s two more starters gone from a team already on its backup quarterback.
Bottom Line
Take the Giants minus two and a half at . Lean. The numbers like the Giants by about four, and the Titans have scored 30 points in two games. But the line dropped three points on the Dart injury, and our number doesn’t know he’s gone, so it stays a lean.
Same-Game Parlay
I like the Giants to win this by a field goal or more, and with Jameis Winston under center I think they lean on Cam Skattebo. If New York covers, it’s because Skattebo is running hard, moving the chains and finishing a drive in the end zone. Every leg needs the same game, so this is one position, not three bets, and it’s a lean like the side.
The angleThe Giants cover by running Skattebo at the Titans and closing out drives with him.
