Give me the ten points. Michigan State won four games last season and not one of them away from home, Toledo won eight, and a new coach does not repair that gap over a single August.
The Matchup
- Toledo was the better football team last season and it is not close. Eight wins against four, and the Spartans did not manage a single victory away from East Lansing. The Number
Ten points says Michigan State is a touchdown and a field goal better than a team that won twice as many games. I understand how the market got there. Fitzgerald is a serious hire, a Friday night opener in Spartan Stadium with a new era starting is worth something real, and Toledo is breaking in a quarterback nobody has seen carry a season. None of that adds up to double digits in the first week of September.
The total is the more interesting half of this board. Forty-eight and a half is the second-lowest number on the Friday slate, two points higher than when this went up, and the market earned that honestly: two coordinator installations that are five weeks old, a Toledo offense handing the keys to a first-time starter, and a Michigan State team that scored like a four-win outfit last season because that is what it was. My worry is that low openers are often right for the wrong reason. These offenses are not bad. They are early.
So I am on the Under at forty-eight and a half, and I am on it lighter than I am on the points, and lighter again now the number has moved two points against it. If Fitzgerald’s first team comes out sharp and Milivojevic looks like the passer from those nine games, this gets to fifty before the fourth quarter. The spread is the play here.
