Arizona underperformed its own scoring by more than any team in football last season, which is normally where we go looking for value. Then you check the calendar and the whole argument gets complicated. This is the hardest schedule in the NFL, and the Cardinals have to beat it with the roster that just went 3-14.

32nd
Arizona's 2026 strength of schedule. The hardest in the league, by every measure

Key Storylines

  • The record was worse than the team, by the widest margin in the league. Arizona scored 355 and allowed 488, a minus-133 differential worth about 5.4 wins by Pythagorean expectation. They went 3-14. That is a 2.4-win underperformance, bigger than every team on our board except Kansas City, and it is the same shape that made us reverse our position on the Colts and the Chiefs.
  • The schedule is why we are not treating it the same way. This is the check most previews skip. Arizona’s 2025 slate ranked 11th lightest in the league by Vegas win totals, so that 5.4 was not earned against murderers row. It was earned against a fairly normal schedule. Now they draw the hardest schedule in football for 2026, per Pro Football Focus. The backward-looking number is not deflated and the road ahead is far worse. Both of those cut the same way.
  • The forward-looking projection is the honest number. PFF projects Arizona at 4.3 wins, the lowest total in the NFL, and that figure already prices the schedule. Against a line of 3.5 that is an edge of about 0.8 wins, not the 1.9 the raw Pythagorean implies. Still on the right side. Nowhere near as comfortable.
  • The offensive line could not protect anybody. Arizona allowed 59 sacks, third most in the league, per FOX Sports, behind a defense that finished 29th in points allowed at 28.7 per game. That is a team losing on both lines, and neither problem is solved by a coaching change alone. The turnover margin was minus one, essentially neutral, so there is no luck rebate waiting either.
  • And no one has told you who plays quarterback. Arizona released Kyler Murray, who signed a one-year deal at the league minimum with Minnesota. What is left is Jacoby Brissett, with Gardner Minshew added on a one-year deal behind him. Brissett is the expected starter and has not been told he is the starter. That is the quarterback room being asked to win four games against the hardest schedule in football, and it is the clearest single reason this position stays at half a unit rather than growing into a full one.
  • Mike LaFleur inherits it, and the hire is at least logical. Jonathan Gannon was fired after three seasons and a 3-14 finish that owner Michael Bidwill and general manager Monti Ossenfort decided they had seen enough of. LaFleur arrives from the Rams, where he coordinated the offense of the team PFF now projects for 11.1 wins, the most in the league. Bringing in the play caller from the best offense in your own division is a defensible answer to a team that could not score.

Win Total Analysis

The number is 3.5, with the Over at -145 and the Under at +120 at BetMGM as of August 3. Note what that means: you are laying a buck forty-five to bet that the worst team in the NFC wins four games.

Two numbers point at the Over and they disagree about how much. The raw Pythagorean says 5.4, which would be a two-win cushion. PFF’s projection, which accounts for the schedule the Pythagorean ignores, says 4.3. We are using the smaller number, because it is the one that knows about the calendar.

So the honest case is this: Arizona needs four wins, the best available projection says they get four and a third, and you pay -145 for the privilege. That is a real edge and a thin one. It is enough to take a position. It is not enough to take a standard play.

What has to go right is straightforward. The Cardinals went 0-6 against their own division last season, and PFF now projects all three NFC West rivals near or above ten wins: the Rams at 11.1 and Seattle at 11.0, with San Francisco at 9.8. Six games are effectively written off before the season starts. The four wins have to come from eleven games, and six of the first nine are on the road. Arizona also opens away from home for a fourth consecutive year and does not get its bye until Week 14, the latest slot available.

That is a brutal structure, and it is exactly why the number is 3.5 rather than 5.5. Our position is that the market has still gone slightly too far, not that Arizona is secretly good.

Half a unit on the Over at -145 and nothing else before Week 1. This is a small position on a thin edge, and the sizing should say so. If the number ever drifts to 4.5, do not chase it up. If you can find the Over at even money or better at another book, that improves the bet more than any argument in this preview does. Revisit at the bye, which does not arrive until Week 14.

Division Odds

There is nothing to bet here. The NFC West contains the defending Super Bowl champion and the highest projected win total in the league. The 49ers won twelve games a year ago. Arizona is a live underdog in individual games and nothing more than that. If you want NFC West exposure, it is on the other three.

Best Futures Bets

  • Over 3.5 wins (-145) at BetMGM, half a unit: The only season-long Cardinals position worth taking, and it is small because the price is poor and the edge is under a win.
  • Division game live dogs (in-season): A 3.5-win team playing six games against opponents projected at ten wins or better will be laid enormous numbers. Teams in that spot cover far more often than they win, and Arizona was competitive on the scoreboard last season despite the record. Worth watching weekly rather than betting now.

Schedule Landmines

Weeks 1-4@ Chargers + Seahawks
Weeks 5-9@ Rams + Lions
Weeks 10-14Rams + @ Chiefs
Weeks 15-1849ers + @ Saints
  • Weeks 1-4, @ Chargers and Seahawks: A fourth straight year opening on the road, and the first month is brutal. The Week 1 trip to the Chargers starts it, followed by the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks at home in Week 2. Week 3 at San Francisco is a road game against a twelve-win team, and a Week 4 trip to the Giants adds a third road game in four weeks. The Over does not need any of these. It needs Arizona to stay close enough to bank wins later, and 1-3 is the realistic ceiling.
  • Weeks 5-9, @ Rams and Lions: The hardest stretch on the calendar. Detroit visits in Week 5, a nine-win team a year ago, and the Week 6 trip to the Rams puts Arizona against the highest-projected roster in the league. Denver at home in Week 7 off a 14-3 season is the one game on this slate that could go either way. Then two straight road trips close the quarter, at Dallas in Week 8 and Seattle in Week 9. Three road games in five weeks against that quality of opponent is where the Over path gets thin.
  • Weeks 10-14, Rams and @ Chiefs: The second Rams meeting opens this quarter at home in Week 10, and a Week 11 trip to Kansas City is a road game against a 10.5-win team. Washington visits in Week 12 and Philadelphia in Week 13, two NFC East opponents that represent the best chance for home wins. The bye finally arrives in Week 14, the latest slot in the league. If Arizona has two wins by this point, the Over is still alive. If it has one, the math needs help the schedule will not provide.
  • Weeks 15-18, 49ers and @ Saints: The easiest quarter on the calendar and the one the Over was built for. The Jets visit in Week 15 and the Raiders in Week 17, two sub-six-win opponents at home. A Week 16 trip to New Orleans is the most winnable road date on the entire schedule. The finale is San Francisco at home in Week 18, a division game that could be meaningless for the 49ers and everything for Arizona. If the Cardinals arrive here needing two wins from four, the path is real. That is the entire bet in one sentence.

Bottom Line

The largest underperformance in football meets the hardest schedule in football. The projection still lands above the number, so the Over is the side, but this is a half play at a bad price and you should treat it that way.

These two say the same thing about the NFC West: the top is genuinely elite and the bottom is not as bad as 3-14 looked. Seattle carries the ticket and Arizona is the leg that makes the price worth writing down. Both sit at one book so it is placeable.
