USC opens at home as a 38-point favorite and nobody sane is betting that. The number worth looking at is the total. Sixty-one and a half asks San Jose State to score, and San Jose State cannot.
The Matchup
- San Jose State is 121st in SP+. The offense rates 113th and runs into a USC defense rated 28th. For a 61.5 total to land, the Spartans need to put up something in the high teens against the best defense they will see for a month. That is the whole ticket, and it is the half of the scoreboard nobody is talking about.
- The Trojans will get theirs, and it still is not enough on its own. Jayden Maiava is back after leading the country with a 91.2 QBR and throwing for 3,711 yards, and SP+ rates this offense sixth. Call it 45 for USC and the visitors still have to find 17 to push this over. Nobody is arguing USC scores. The question is whether anyone else does.
- Lincoln Riley is 9-0 in season openers, and none of them needed a fourth quarter. Blowouts shorten themselves. The running game comes out, the second unit comes in, and the last twelve minutes go by in a hurry. Points stop being scored long before the game ends, which is the quiet way a number like this one dies.
The Number
Sort out what 61.5 actually requires. USC has to hang something close to 45, which it can, and then San Jose State has to find the rest. A team rated 113th on offense scoring 17 on a top-30 defense in its opener is the specific thing you are betting against, and it does not happen often.
The best Under price is -108 at BetMGM, with DraftKings at -112 and FanDuel at -110. On a half play the two cents matter less than usual, but there is no reason to give them away. Our USC season preview has the Trojans on the Under 8.5 wins for the year, and nothing here changes that read. This is a body-bag opener against a bad team, which is exactly the sort of Saturday that inflates a season number without proving anything.
The case against is USC’s sixth-rated offense in a game where Riley has every reason to keep his starters on the field, which is why this is half a play.
In-Game Bets
- If USC leads by three scores at the half. The live total will fall, but it will not fall far enough. A 35-3 halftime does not become a 62-point game, because the winning side stops throwing and the losing side cannot move the ball. Take the live Under at whatever number the book posts after the break.
- If San Jose State scores on its opening drive. The live total jumps on the first script of the game more than it should. That is the best price the Under will see all afternoon, and the Spartans putting together one drive against this defense is not evidence they can do it four more times.
- If Maiava is on the bench in the fourth. His passing props die the moment the backup jogs on, and in a game like this that can happen with the third quarter barely finished. Anything you hold on his yardage needs to be settled or hedged before the second unit takes over.
Bottom Line
Take the Under 61.5 at -108, half a play. USC scores whatever it wants, but a 61-point game needs both teams to participate, and San Jose State rates 113th on offense against the best defense on its schedule so far. The Trojans winning 45-10 is the likeliest version of this afternoon, and that is eleven points under the number.
