I’m back on the Guardians at plus money in Game 2. Cleveland has the better starter tonight, and the price still makes the Rays a clear favorite at home. It’s a lean at confidence one, like every baseball pick here, and it carries a warning flag.
The Matchup
Cleveland won Game 1, 7-3, and it took a while. Tampa Bay scored twice in the first inning and held that lead into the sixth. Then the Guardians scored in each of the last four innings, including three in the ninth, and Hunter Gaddis got the win out of the bullpen. Cleveland leads the series 1-0.
That’s four straight wins for the Guardians, three of them in elimination games against Chicago. The Rays swept the Yankees and then sat for five days, and their bats looked like it for most of Game 1. First pitch is 8:00 PM ET Tuesday in Tampa Bay.
The Pitching
Cleveland starts Parker Messick, who had one of the best seasons in the American League: 12-9 with a 2.56 ERA, 193 strikeouts and a 1.06 WHIP over 186 innings. October has been harder. He started twice against Chicago and threw six and two thirds innings total, with a 5.40 ERA and eleven strikeouts. He hasn’t pitched since last Thursday, so he’s rested.
Tampa Bay goes with Freddy Peralta, and his season comes in two pieces. He had a 4.99 ERA with the Mets before the Rays traded for him in August. Since the trade he’s 5-2 with a 3.25 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP, and he allowed one run in four and two thirds innings against the Yankees in his division series start.
How I See It
Our numbers start from each team’s runs scored and allowed over the full season, swap in the day’s starter, and add a little for home field. They call Game 2 a coin flip, Cleveland about 50%. The price, with the books’ margin taken out, says Cleveland about 45%. That’s a gap of five points, past our four-point warning line.
Here’s the honest part. Our numbers use Peralta’s full season, and he’s been a better pitcher in Tampa Bay than he was in New York. Use his Rays numbers and most of that gap goes away. What’s left is Messick’s full season against Peralta’s good two months, and Messick’s season is the better one. That’s enough for a lean, not more.
Bottom Line
Take the Guardians on the moneyline at . Lean. Cleveland has the better starter and is getting plus money. The gap is past our warning line, and part of it comes from Peralta’s time with another team, so it’s a lean at confidence one.
Same-Game Parlay
If Cleveland wins Game 2, the likeliest version is Messick pitching like he did all season in a game that stays low. He has cleared four and a half strikeouts in two of his last three. Every leg needs the same night, so this is one position, not three bets, and it’s a lean like the side.
The angleMessick pitches like his season and Cleveland wins a low-scoring Game 2.
