I’ll take the Rays at plus money in Game 3 in Cleveland. Our numbers call this close to a coin flip, and the price makes Tampa Bay a short underdog. That’s a few points of value on the team that won 98 games. Like every baseball pick here until our numbers build a track record, it’s a lean at confidence one.
The Matchup
The series is tied at a game apiece. Cleveland took Game 1, 7-3, with four straight innings of scoring. Tampa Bay answered in Game 2, 3-1, behind six scoreless innings from Freddy Peralta, with Liam Hicks driving in two. Parker Messick was just as good for Cleveland through five, but the Guardians managed one run.
The regular season wasn’t close. The Rays went 98-64 and outscored teams by 86 runs. The Guardians went 85-77 and outscored teams by 11. Cleveland has been the better story in October, with three straight elimination wins in the division series, but Tampa Bay has been the better team over six months.
First pitch is 1:00 PM ET Thursday at Progressive Field, on TBS. The game was moved up from 6:00 PM because of rain in the evening forecast.
The Pitching
Tampa Bay starts Griffin Jax, a reliever turned starter. He went 8-10 with a 3.53 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 112 innings, with 23 starts, but lately he’s gone about five innings on 70 pitches. Expect the Rays’ bullpen to cover the back half of this game.
Cleveland starts Gavin Williams on regular rest. He went 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA and 248 strikeouts in 184 innings, and he’s been dominant this month: 11 strikeouts in Game 1 of the division series and 12 more over five and two thirds scoreless innings in Game 5.
How I See It
Our numbers start from each team’s runs scored and allowed over the full season, swap in the day’s starter, and add a little for home field. They make this almost dead even, with Cleveland at 51%. The price, with the books’ margin taken out, says Cleveland wins about 54% of the time. That’s a gap of a little over three points on Tampa Bay.
Here’s the catch. Williams has 23 strikeouts in his last two starts, and our numbers use his full season, not his October. Tampa Bay also strikes out less than any team in baseball, which takes some bite out of a strikeout pitcher. And this time most of the bets are on the Rays too. It’s still a lean, but I’ll take the better team at plus money.
Bottom Line
Take the Rays on the moneyline at . Lean. Our numbers call it close to even, and the price makes Tampa Bay the underdog. Williams’ October is the reason it’s only a lean.
Same-Game Parlay
One read in three legs. If the Rays win Game 3, it’s most likely because their contact hitters keep putting the ball in play against Williams and the middle of the order cashes in. Every leg needs the same night, so this is one position, not three bets, and it’s a lean like the side.
