Pitt has won eight of the last ten against Syracuse and the number already knows it. I lean Pittsburgh minus ten and a half, but I am not staking it.

Points between our projection and the board in Syracuse at Pittsburgh. The market has already done the math

The Matchup

  • The Pitt defense has been the story of September. The Panthers held UCF to 206 total yards and 20 rushing yards in a 12-7 win played through a weather delay and steady rain. Through two games they have allowed 21 points and 23.5 rushing yards a game. Pat Narduzzi on stopping the run this week: “That’s kind of what we do.”
  • Mason Heintschel can also win a game on his own. He went 31 of 41 for 453 yards and seven touchdowns against Miami (OH), tying a school record, and has not thrown an interception in two games. Pitt has injury questions at the skill spots, with running back Ja’Kyrian Turner and receiver Malik Knight both on the report and the sources split on how likely either is to play.
  • Syracuse lost its ACC opener in the second half. The Orange led Cal 12-7 at halftime, then Steve Angeli threw three interceptions after the break, one returned for a touchdown, and a tying field goal missed with 1:35 left in a 21-18 home loss. Syracuse leads the country with 27 penalties, and Fran Brown said this week that pre-snap penalties are not acceptable.
  • The Syracuse injury list is long for a road trip. Offensive linemen Jackson Iak and D’Joni Scatliffe are out, so are receivers Nate Edwards and Terrell Wilfong, and Brown does not expect running back Tylik Hill to play. Both teams are on a short week, and Syracuse has not won in Pittsburgh since 2001.

The Number

SP+ rates Pittsburgh at 10.0 and Syracuse at 1.7, a gap of 8.3 points. Add two and a half for playing at home and the projection is Pitt by 10.8. The board says ten and a half, and it has sat there since last Thursday apart from a brief dip to nine and a half on Saturday night. That is three tenths of a point.

That is the no-bet signal. Everything in The Matchup is real, and it is also the reason this line is ten and a half rather than seven. The market has priced the Pitt run defense and the Syracuse turnovers, and it lands in the same place our numbers do. We only stake a game when the number gives us a reason, and a price that matches our own projection is not one.

If you are playing it regardless, Pittsburgh is the side where the three tenths sit, and it needs an eleven point win. The moneyline around -400 asks for a straight win at a price that leaves almost nothing on the table. The card reads confidence one with no stake, and that is the honest size of this opinion.

In-Game Bets

  • If Syracuse turns the ball over on either of its first two possessions. Hold. That is the Cal second half showing up in the first quarter.
  • If Syracuse has 60 rushing yards at halftime. Get out. The run defense Pitt’s whole case rests on is not there tonight.
  • If Pitt leads by seven to ten in the fourth quarter. Do nothing. That is exactly what a ten and a half point line looks like when both teams play to their numbers.

Bottom Line

Pittsburgh minus ten and a half at is the lean, and it is only a lean. Our numbers make it Pitt by 10.8 and the line has barely moved all week. Watch it. We are not staking it.
