Oregon lost both coordinators and thirty players to the portal. Dante Moore turned down the second overall pick to come back anyway, and I am on the Ducks Over 10.5 at plus money.
Key Storylines
- Both play-callers left and the system did not. Offensive coordinator Will Stein took the Kentucky head coaching job and defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi went to Cal. Oregon promoted Drew Mehringer and Chris Hampton from inside the building rather than hiring outside. The scheme survives. The voice calling it does not, and that is the honest risk on this ticket.
- Dante Moore came back and he did not have to. Moore was a projected No. 2 overall pick and returned anyway. He was not alone. Defensive linemen A’Mauri Washington and Bear Alexander, linebacker Teitum Tuioti and edge rusher Matayo Uiagalelei all passed on the draft. Safety Dillon Thieneman is the notable one who left.
- The next wave is already in Eugene. Oregon signed the No. 3 class in the country, its third straight top-five haul, with five five-star signees, the most of anybody: tight end Kendre Harrison, tackle Immanuel Iheanacho, safety Jett Washington, receiver Jalen Lott and edge Anthony Jones Jr. Freshmen do not decide a 10.5. But when a roster loses thirty players and restocks with that, the floor stays high, and that is what Dan Lanning has built: the departures make headlines and the depth chart barely notices.
- The portal cut both ways. Thirty players out, thirteen in, and a portal class that ranked 25th after back-to-back top-five portal hauls. Safety Koi Perich arrives from Minnesota and Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola arrives to redshirt behind Moore. Depth is thinner than it was. The starting lineup is not.
- The line is three new starters and one of the best centers in the country. Iapani Laloulu did not allow a sack in 907 snaps last season, and he returns with guards Dave Iuli and Kawika Rogers. Fox Crader steps in at left tackle and Yale transfer Michael Bennett III, two thousand snaps in the Ivy League, takes the right side. Oregon gave up one sack in its first five games last year. Three new starters is the honest concern. The interior is not.
- New kicker, same punter. Gage Hurych replaces Atticus Sappington, and special teams coordinator Joe Lorig said in August he is confident in him. Bailey Ettridge, the Australian, is back punting. On an 11-1 ticket, one missed kick in Columbus is the season, so this is worth watching in September.
- They already cleared this number. Oregon went 11-1 in the 2025 regular season, beat Texas Tech 23-0 in the Orange Bowl, then ran into Indiana in the Peach Bowl and lost 56-22. Dan Lanning is 48-8 since 2022. This is not a team being asked to do something new.
Win Total Analysis
The number is 10.5. FanDuel pays +106 on the Over, BetMGM pays +100, and that six cents is worth the extra app.
Bill Connelly’s preseason SP+, the ESPN power rating this series leans on, has Oregon second overall at 29.2, with the best projected offense in the country and the second-best defense. No other team on the board pairs those two rankings.
Returning production backs it up. Oregon comes back with 66 percent of its snaps and yards, eleventh nationally, which is a strong figure for a team that just played fifteen games.
The Over needs 11-1. The Under needs two losses. That sounds severe until you remember Oregon just did exactly that, and did it with a lower returning-production number than it carries now. The quarterback who ran that offense is still in Eugene, having turned down being the second player drafted.
What holds me to a standard play rather than a big one is the coaching turnover. Losing both coordinators in one offseason is not nothing, even promoting from within, and the schedule sends Oregon to Ohio State in November. One slip anywhere else and the Over is gone.

Big Ten Picture
The conference is the sport right now. Ohio State is the preseason number one, Oregon is number two, and Indiana is the defending national champion. Oregon plays one of those three, and it is on the road on November 7.
Oregon does not play Indiana at all in 2026. For a team that lost to the Hoosiers by 34 in January, missing the rematch during the regular season is quietly one of the better things on this schedule.
Best Futures Bets
- Over 10.5 wins (+106): The lead play, and shop it. FanDuel is six cents better than BetMGM on the identical bet.
- Big Ten winner: Watch list. Oregon would have to win in Columbus to get there, and until that price posts somewhere I can confirm, I am not quoting a number I have not seen.
Schedule Landmines
Weeks 1-3: Boise State comes to Autzen on September 5, then a trip to Oklahoma State, then Portland State at home. Boise State is a real opener and Portland State is an FCS opponent. The Over needs all three.
Weeks 4-7: Oregon goes to USC on September 26, takes the bye, then hosts UCLA and Nebraska. The Los Angeles trip is the first honest road test for a new play-caller.
Weeks 8-10: A trip to Illinois on October 24, Northwestern at home, then the season turns on November 7 in Columbus. Ohio State is the preseason number one and Oregon has to go there.
Weeks 11-13: Michigan comes to Autzen on November 14, then a short trip to Michigan State, then Washington closes it in Eugene on November 28. Three straight against teams that can beat you is a brutal way to finish a season that needs 11-1.
Bottom Line
Both coordinators left and the roster did not. The rating says second in the country, the quarterback turned down the second pick to come back, and the number is the same one they cleared a year ago. Take the Over at +106.
