South Carolina won four games last season. The line for this one is six and a half. That is not a typo, and I am taking the Over.

Here is the strange part. Bill Connelly, the ESPN numbers man whose ratings this pick leans on, groups the Gamecocks with Florida, Missouri and Tennessee and warns that “at least a couple will end up on the wrong side of close games and hovering around .500.” Hovering around .500 is 6-6. Six and six loses this ticket. I am giving you the bear case first because it is the strongest one, and it comes from the man whose own numbers I am leaning on.

The price is my answer. The Over is -102 and the Under is -120, about as close to a true coin flip as a book will post. When a market is priced that evenly, nobody is charging you to disagree with them. A small edge is worth acting on and a big stake is not. That is why this is a half play and not a full one.

4-8
South Carolina's 2025 record. SP+ ranks them 24th anyway

Key Storylines

  • The record and the rating tell two different stories. South Carolina went 4-8, and 1-7 in the SEC, the kind of year that usually drags a win total to five. Connelly’s SP+ rating has them 24th in the country at 12.6, six spots ahead of where the preseason poll put them. That is a rating insisting the team was better than the record, and the 6.5 sits closer to the rating than to the record.
  • The quarterback stayed. LaNorris Sellers is back, and so is edge rusher Dylan Stewart. After a 4-8 season the best players usually hit the portal. These two did not, and that is the most concrete reason to believe the rating over the record. New coordinator Kendal Briles arrives to build the offense around Sellers. Sellers is the one worth turning the game on for, and Stewart is why there is a sacks prop on watch below.
  • The line gave up 43 sacks, and the fix has a bad knee. South Carolina ranked 131st in the country in sacks allowed last season. Left tackle Josiah Thompson is back after two years on Sellers’ blind side, and the portal brought Carter Miller from UCF and Emmanuel Poku from East Carolina, nearly sixty starts between them. The headliner was Jacarrius Peak, the No. 1 tackle in the portal after 32 straight starts at NC State, who then hurt his knee in the spring badly enough that his availability for September is an open question. Sellers behind a repaired line is the Over case. Sellers behind last year’s line is how 4-8 happened.
  • Shane Beamer needs this season. Sixth year, 33-30, and the talk around Columbia is that seven wins is roughly what keeps the job. I am not going to pretend that only cuts our way. A staff coaching for its life can squeeze out an extra win, or it can press and drop games it had no business losing.
  • The defense is where the portal money went. Clayton White is back for a sixth season calling it, and SP+ projects the unit 21st in the country, twenty spots ahead of the offense. Shane Beamer brought in 25 new players and loaded the front: Tomiwa Durojaiye from Illinois, an All-Big Ten lineman, Caleb Herring from Tennessee with four sacks last year, and Kelby Collins from Alabama, next to Stewart off the edge. Kicker Malik Orsan arrives from Southeast Missouri to take the field goals, and punter Mason Love returns. A 21st-ranked defense with a 41st-ranked offense is a team that plays close games, which is exactly what Connelly was warning about.
  • The polls and the rating disagree, and the book split the difference. The preseason poll has South Carolina 30th. SP+ has them 24th. A poll guesses where a team finishes. A rating measures how good it is right now. The number landed at 6.5, right between them, which tells me the market has no strong view here. That is why the edge is small and the stake is light.
  • The schedule hands them the bottom three. South Carolina draws Mississippi State, Kentucky and Arkansas, the three lowest-rated teams in the conference, and gets two of them at Williams-Brice. That is how a 4-8 team reaches seven. It is also the catch, because the rest of the card gives away nothing.

Win Total Analysis

The number is 6.5. The Over is -102 and the Under is -120. Strip the juice and the market says 48.1% Over, 51.9% Under. That is a book shrugging.

SP+, for anyone new here, is Bill Connelly’s power rating at ESPN: a measure of how good a team actually is, projected game by game against the real schedule. It puts South Carolina at 6.5 wins against the 13th-toughest schedule in the country. I adjust every SP+ number before I use it, because across the 28 college teams where I hold both a projection and a posted line, SP+ runs about 0.15 wins below the market. That lands the Gamecocks at 6.65 against a line of 6.5, and the Over near 53% against a market pricing it at 48.1%. Small edge. It survived every assumption I threw at it, and it lives entirely in the price.

Count the path and the shape shows itself. Kent State and Towson are two wins. Mississippi State at Williams-Brice, Kentucky at Williams-Brice and a trip to Arkansas are the three weakest teams in the SEC, and sweeping them gets South Carolina to five. The Over then needs two more from a genuinely hard seven: Alabama and Florida and Oklahoma and Clemson on the road, Tennessee and Texas A&M and Georgia at home.

The Over needs seven wins from twelve; the Under needs South Carolina to lose six. Two from that hard seven is the whole bet. A team that goes 5-0 against the soft part and 0-7 against the rest lands on 6-6 and tears up the ticket. That is the exact season Connelly warned about.

SEC Picture

South Carolina is not winning the SEC, and there are no divisions left to sneak through. What the Gamecocks are, in the first year of a nine-game league schedule, is a team the ratings like a lot more than last year’s record does, drawing all three of the conference’s weakest opponents.

That combination is why this market sits at a coin flip instead of down at five and a half. The books can read a schedule too. They just landed a fraction below my adjusted number, and a fraction is all this is.

The same thinking covers two other teams on our board, which is why the ticket below is a three-leg slip instead of a single.

Why it connects
One opinion at three prices. Each of these teams is projected higher by SP+ than the market has priced it, and none of the three plays either of the others, so no leg can knock out another. They are not independent, though, and it is worth being clear about that: all three bank wins against the same bottom of the conference, so if Arkansas, Kentucky and Mississippi State are better than projected, this whole slip suffers at once. Three legs, one book, one thesis.

Best Futures Bets

  • Over 6.5 wins (-102): The lead play, at half a stake. An adjusted 6.65 against a line of 6.5, at a price with almost no juice on it. Small edge, honestly priced.
  • LaNorris Sellers passing yards: A watch item until the board posts. Season passing totals for a returning starter under a new coordinator get set off last year’s usage, not this year’s scheme, and Briles offenses throw. Wait for the number.
  • Dylan Stewart sacks: Also a watch item. Edge rushers on mid-pack SEC teams get sack numbers priced off team expectations instead of snap counts, and that is the wrong input. Price it yourself before you peek.

Schedule Landmines

Weeks 1-4Mississippi State, @ Alabama
Weeks 5-8Kentucky, @ Florida, Tennessee
Weeks 9-12@ Oklahoma, Texas A&M, @ Arkansas
Weeks 13Georgia, @ Clemson
  • Mississippi State at home, September 19. Week three, the first of the three games this bet is built on, and the first Sandstorm of the SEC season. Mississippi State projects at 4.7 wins. If South Carolina is what the rating says, this is a comfortable night at Williams-Brice. If it is not, I am wrong, and you will know by the third Saturday.
  • At Florida, October 10. The most winnable of the seven hard games and the one most likely to decide this ticket. Florida projects at 7.0 against South Carolina’s 6.5, close to a pick on a neutral field, and it is in the Swamp. Steal it and the Over needs one more from the last six.
  • At Arkansas, November 14. The quiet one. Arkansas carries the lowest SP+ projection in the SEC at 4.4 wins, and it is the only one of the three soft spots the Gamecocks have to win on the road. Late November trips to bad teams are where good seasons go to die. This bet cannot afford one.
  • Georgia at home, then at Clemson. The closer: the SEC’s best team, then the Palmetto Bowl on the road, back to back. If South Carolina shows up to that pair still needing a win, the Over is in real trouble. I want the business done by mid-November and those last two weeks treated as upside, not part of the plan.

Bottom Line

South Carolina went 4-8 and the rating still says top 25, which means the record lied. My adjusted number is 6.65 against a line of 6.5, and the price is -102 with almost nothing baked in. The Gamecocks get all three of the league’s weakest teams and still need two from a hard seven, and Connelly himself says teams in this group finish near .500. Small edge, half a stake. Over 6.5 at -102.
