Lane Kiffin’s first night in Death Valley, and the books hung fifty and a half on a game between two of the best defenses in the sport. Somebody is going to be disappointed. I am taking the Under.
The Matchup
- Two top-20 defenses is the entire ticket. SP+ rates LSU’s defense third in the country and Clemson’s 18th. Our LSU season preview called that defense the best unit on the roster by a distance, and our Clemson preview made the same case about Tom Allen’s group. Both reads were written before this line went up, and both point the same way here.
- Clemson’s offense is the soft spot in the number. SP+ has it 46th, which is 25 spots below its own defense. Christopher Vizzina is the favorite to start but has not been formally named, with true freshman Tait Reynolds still in the conversation. A 46th-rated offense that does not know its own quarterback, opening on the road against the third-best defense in the sport, is not scoring 24.
- It is a first night for the entire LSU operation. Kiffin is calling this offense for the first time in Baton Rouge, and quarterback Sam Leavitt is coming off Lisfranc surgery on his right foot, which everyone involved says is fully healed. A new staff installing a new system in September tends to play it careful rather than open, and careful is what this number needs.
Live prices for this game are not currently posted by our partner books.
The Number
Work out what 50.5 actually requires. You need something in the neighbourhood of 31-20, and that asks Clemson’s 46th-rated offense to put up three touchdowns on the third-best defense in the country in its first outing of the year. LSU getting to 30 is the easier half of it, and even that asks Kiffin’s first-night offense to solve an 18th-rated Clemson defense. The likeliest version of this game is 27-17, and that is six and a half points clear of the number.
Now the part you should hold against me: this is not the number the article was written on. It went up when the total was 51 and a half and the best Under was -114, a price that needs 53.3 percent to break even. The line has since come down a full point to 50.5 while the best price improved to -105, which needs 51.2 percent. Better price, worse number, and the point matters more than the nine cents. The market has arrived where this article already was, so you are buying the same opinion with less room than we had. That is why it stays half a play.
The case against is that Kiffin offenses score and LSU rates 21st on that side, so one broken night from the home offense takes this over on its own.
In-Game Bets
- If the first quarter ends 7-3 or lower. The live total will come down and it will not come down far enough, because the number still expects second-half scoring that two defenses this good do not give up. Take the live Under again after the opening fifteen.
- If Clemson gives it away twice in the first half. Get out. Two short fields is how a 27-17 game becomes 38-24 without either offense ever looking good, and it is the specific way this ticket dies. Take the loss on the live number.
- If Leavitt is moving badly or the backup warms up. The live Under gets better immediately, because a repaired foot in a first start is the one injury here that takes an offense out of its own script. The market prices that slower than you can.
Bottom Line
Take the Under at , half a play. The third-best defense in the country is hosting a 46th-rated offense that has not settled on a quarterback, and the two teams meeting here are the two our season previews already had going under their win totals. The number is a point worse than when we posted this and the price is nine cents better, and the side has not changed.
